Lady Bears Dominate in Last Non Conference Game!
Saturday, January 25, 2025: Women's Basketball
Baton Rouge, LA
The Lady Bears played against the LSU Club team this afternoon, marking it the last game before the conference begins next week. This matchup came after their game against East Texas Baptist JV, scheduled for January 21, was canceled due to arctic weather in the Baton Rouge area. The two teams faced each other last weekend in the Bears Den, where the Lady Bears secured a hard-fought victory, winning 62-52. Today, they aimed to fine-tune their offensive and defensive strategies in preparation for LCCAC play.
After an early tie at two points in the first quarter, the Lady Bears went on a scoring run, netting 11 consecutive points to take a 13-2 lead with 2:54 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Tigers responded by scoring the last five points of the quarter, closing the gap to 13-7 by the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bears intensified their defense, forcing the LSU Club team into poor shot selections and committing multiple turnovers. This defensive pressure translated into offensive success, giving the Lady Bears a significant boost from J'nyria Kelly, who contributed 9 of her 14 points during this quarter. As a result, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Tigers 23-12 in the second quarter, taking a solid 36-19 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw a back-and-forth contest between the two teams, with the LSU Club team outscoring the Lady Bears 16-15. Despite this, the Lady Bears maintained a 51-35 advantage leading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears dominated defensively, limiting the Lady Tigers to just 7 points. On the offensive end, sophomore guard Frandreka Keller shined, scoring 7 of her team-high 17 points in the quarter. The Lady Bears ultimately outscored the Lady Tigers 25-7 in this final period, securing a convincing 76-42 victory.
Frandreka Keller led the Lady Bears with 17 points and 6 assists. The Lady Bears had four players score in double figures: Zoriahn Davis, Shelcie LeBlanc, Frandreka Keller, and J'nyria Kelly, who added 14 points and 6 rebounds. Akiyah Carnes also made an impact, grabbing 12 rebounds. Amari Mackey led the Lady Tigers with 8 points. With this victory, the Lady Bears improved their season record to 8-5.
A special note: Head Coach Paula Lee achieved a significant milestone with this victory, marking her 200th career win at BRCC.
