Lady Bears conclude regular season with victory over LSUE

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears faced off against the LSUE Lady Bengals, the LCCAC regular season champions, this evening to conclude the regular season for both teams. The Lady Bears managed to withstand a second-half rally from the Lady Bengals, securing a 63 to 54 victory. With this win, the Lady Bears halted the Lady Bengals' 13-game winning streak and ended their perfect record in LCCAC play.
The first quarter was a defensive battle, with both teams struggling offensively. They combined to score only 15 points, leaving the Lady Bears with a narrow 10-5 lead by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bears extended their lead to seven points, going ahead 14-7 with seven minutes remaining. However, the Lady Bengals found their offensive rhythm, outscoring the Lady Bears 12 to 7 in that quarter. Despite this, the Lady Bears maintained a ten-point lead at halftime, 27-17.
The Lady Bengals ramped up their defensive intensity in the third quarter, disrupting the Lady Bears' flow and allowing the Bengals to go on a 22 to 12 run, tying the game at 39. The Lady Bengals took their first lead of the game with 2:55 left in the quarter, converting two free throws. Trinitee Whitaker then scored in the paint and completed a three-point play, putting the Bears back in front at 42-41. The quarter ended with the Lady Bears leading by a slim margin of 46 to 44.
In the fourth quarter, the teams exchanged baskets and leads. At the 7:47 mark, the score was tied at 48. Zoriahn Davis then gave the Bears the lead again with a basket, making it 50-48. With two minutes left, the Lady Bears held just a two-point lead at 54-52. However, they finished strong, outscoring the Lady Bengals 9-1 to secure the 63-53 victory. Key contributions came from Davis, LeBlanc, Keller, and James.
Frandreka Keller led the Lady Bears in scoring with 12 points, complemented by 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Zoriahn Davis added 10 points, while DeZarae Stewart contributed 9 points and 5 rebounds. Shelcie LeBlanc had 6 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists.
With this victory, the Lady Bears improved their record to 15-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference, while the Lady Bengals fell to 19-10 and 8-1 in conference play. LSUE still holds the all-time series advantage over Baton Rouge with a record of 26 wins and 20 losses.
The Lady Bears now await news on whether they will receive an at-large bid to the Region XXIII Tournament starting next week.
