Baton Rouge Lady Bears open 2022 with a win!

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears opened the 2022 portion of their season on the road at Southwest Mississippi. Baton Rouge would take an early lead and survive a late rally by Southwest Mississippi to earn the 56 to 51 victory this afternoon in Summit.

Despite being away from the court for nearly two weeks the BRCC Lady Bears showed little rust, in the first quarter, on the offensive end of the floor. BRCC would jump out to an 18 to 4 lead with 2:04 left in the quarter.  Angel Bradford and Verd Fontaine combined for 15 of those 18 points. Southwest Lady Bears would find a bit of rhythm on the offensive end, in the final two minutes of the quarter, as the would outscore BRCC 6 to 3.  At the end of the first quarter, Baton Rouge held a 21 to 10 lead over Southwest Mississippi.

The second quarter was a bit of a back-and-forth game between the two sets of Lady Bears.  Southwest Mississippi would outscore Baton Rouge 15 to 13, in the quarter. Southwest would get 9 of those points from the free throw line.  At the half, Baton Rouge led Southwest 34 to 25.

The third quarter was a low scoring affair as both teams increased their defensive pressure and they both struggled on the offensive end.  Baton Rouge would outscore Southwest 10 to 8 in the quarter.  After three quarter, Baton Rouge led 44 to 33.

In the fourth quarter, Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears would open the quarter on an 18 to 7 run to pull even with the Baton Rouge Lady Bears at 51. With the score tied, Baton Rouge's freshman forward Stephanie Stewart would hit a three pointer to give BRCC a 54 to 51 lead which they would not relinquish.  BRCC would get a three pointer from freshman guard Angel Bradford to secure the 56 to 51 Region 23 victory.

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears were led in scoring by Angel Bradford with 23 points.. Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears were led in coring by Gabby Bunch with 11 points.

Baton Rouge improves to 7-5 with the victory while Southwest Mississippi falls to 7-4 on the season.

 

Lady Bears Highlights:

Angel Bradford led all Lady Bears with 23 points, 3 rebounds,2 assist and 3 steals

An'Tiesha Griffin added 10 points with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal

Verd Fontaine scored 8 points with 8 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocks

 

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears will continue their Region 23 road swing with a match up with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs at 2 pm on Saturday January8 in Perkinston, MS.
