Lady Bears Overcome Slow Start to Get the Victory

Baton Rouge Lady Bears overcome a sluggish first half to defeat the Costal Alabama South Sun Chiefs by the final score of 60 to 39, tonight in the Jack Robertson Arena.

In the first quarter, the Baton Rouge Lady Bears were sloppy on both ends of the floor. Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with 8:11. Despite the sloppy play, by the Lady Bears, they would pull even at the end of the first quarter 14-14. The Lady Bears would use an 8 to 3 run during the final six minutes of the quarter to tie the ball game.

In the second quarter, it was much of the same for the Lady Bears. The Lady Bears did open the quarter with a three-point play by Stephanie Stewart to take a brief 17 to 14 leads. The Sun Chiefs would go on a 9-0 run to open a nine-point advantage over the Lady Bears; 26-17. The Lady Bears struggled to get anything going on the offensive end till the last minute of the quarter. An'Tiesha Griffin and Frandreka Keller would score five points, for the Lady Bears, to close the gap at halftime; 28-22. The Sun Chiefs outscored the Lady Bears 14 to 8, in the second quarter.

At the half, the Lady Bears Coaching Staff encouraged them to play harder, play with more passion and intensity and execute the game plan.

In the second half, the Lady Bears came out alive and more passionate on both ends of the floor, especially the defensive end. Baton Rouge would hold Coastal Alabama South to only 11 points combined, in the third and fourth quarter. In the third quarter, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Eagles 19 to 8 to take a 41 to 36 lead. The Lady Bears increased their defensive pressure forcing the Lady Eagles into multiple turnovers. The Lady Bears converted on those turnovers. Also, the Lady Bears settled down on the offensive end and was able to execute their half-court offense. Angel Bradford would rebound a Kirstin Journet free throw and nail a corner three to give the Lady Bears the lead that they would never relinquish; 36-34. Angel would score the next five points for the Lady Bears to give them a 41 to 36 lead over the Sun Chiefs.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears continued to find their stroke on the offensive end while clamping down on the defensive end. The Lady Bears would outscore the Lady Eagles 19 to 3 ,in the fourth quarter, to grab the 60 to 39 victory. Freshman Guard Stephanie Stewart would score 7 of her 10 points in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Angel Bradford with 13 points. The Lady Bears had four student athletes score in double figures. The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by S. Lilly with 7 points.

With the victory, the Baton Rouge Lady Bears improve to 6-3, while the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs fall to 2-5 on the season.

Angel Bradford led the Lady Bears with a game high 13 points.

An'Tiesha Griffin scored 11 points

Alanna Donaldson and Stephanie Stewart each added 10 a piece

 

The Lady Bears will return home this Thursday December 9th to take on the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs at 5:30 pm. This will be the last home game for the Lady Bears before they break for the semester. The Lady Bears will finish out the first half of the season on the road at Bishop State on Friday December 17.
