Second half surge propels Lady Bears to victory

A late rally by the Baton Rouge Lady Bears and some stingy second half defense leads them to an 82 to 73 victory tonight versus Southern Shreveport Lady Jags.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair between the two team for the first five minutes. In that time span, the game was tied three times and saw four lead changes.  The Lady Bears guard's hands were active, forcing turnovers leading to layups or inside the paint buckets. After one quarter, the Lady Bears led 21 to 20.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bears increased their defensive pressure, continued being aggressive on defense, and were attacking the basket on the offensive end. Again, it was a back-and-forth game, with the Lady Bears building a 9-point lead with 4:50. The Lady Jags would not go away as they would continue to score in the paint and were aggressive on the boards. The Lady Jags would go on a 18-4 run, the last 4 minutes of the half, to take a 47 to 42 lead into the break.

At the half, the Lady Bears coaching staff challenged their kids to play harder, value the basketball and get more aggressive on the boards. In the third quarter, the Lady Bears started to limit the Lady Jags to one possession on the offensive end. The Lady Bears  were more aggressive forcing some turnovers that  led to some baskets and them getting to the free throw line. Baton Rouge would trail by one 60 to 59, at the end of the third quarter. Baton Rouge would tie the game twice, in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter. After the game was tied at 66, Baton Rouge would go on a 16 to 7 run led by freshman guards Alanna Donaldson and Angel Bradford. With the late quarter rally the Lady Bears would earn the 82 to 73 conference victory over the Southern Shreveport Lady Jags.

The Lady Bears were led by a trio of student athlete, Angel Bradford, Tronayia Issac and An' Tiesha Griffin who each had 17 points. The Lady Jags were led by Brianasia Owens who had a game high 19 points.

Baton Rouge shot 56.7% from the field compared to 39.7% by Southern Shreveport.  The Lady Bears won the rebounding edge 32 to 25. 

 Lady Bears Game Highlights:

Angel Bradford had 17 points with 5 rebounds, 9assist, and 3 steals. 

Tronayia Issac had 17 points with 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

An' Tiesha Griffin had 17 points with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals.

Alanna Donaldson scored 10 points with 3 rebounds, and 1 assist.

Amani Barrow scored 9 points with 3 rebounds and 1 steal.

 

With the victory the Lady Bears improve to 5-7, 3-4 in conference while the Lady Jags fall to 4-6, 1-6 on the season.

 

Next up for the Lady Bears will be a rematch with the Delgado Lady Dolphins this Saturday March 13 at 2 pm in the Crescent City.
