Lady Bears rally for victory

Women's Basketball: Shreveport, LA

A late fourth quarter surge by the Baton Rouge Lady Bears leads them to a 79 to 70 conference victory this evening versus the Southern Shreveport Lady Jags at Booker T. Washington High School.

In the first quarter, the Southern Shreveport Lady Jags jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead with 6:51. Baton Rouge Lady Bears would claw their way back in the game with solid play from their guards and their sophomore post Tronayia Issac. After the first quarter, the Lady Jags led 25 to 20.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bears found their stroke from the field tying the game four times. After the game was tied at 40 with 2:12, the Lady Bears would go on a 8 to 1 run to close out the quarter and take a 48 to 41 lead into halftime.

In the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Lady Bears struggled offensively, while the Lady Jags rallied to tie the game at 50, with 6:50. The Lady Jags would close the quarter on a 13-7 run to take a 63 to 57 lead over the Lady Bears heading into the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears would tie the game twice. After the game was tied at 67 the Lady Bears would hit a jumper by Amani Barrow to take the lead which they would not relinquish. The Lady Bears held the Lady Jags to seven points. The Lady Bears would outscore the Lady Jags 22-7 in the fourth quarter to seal the 79 to 70 conference victory.

 

Lady Bears shot 50%from the field compared to 38.7% by the Lady Jags. The Bears shot 17-21 from the free throw line, 81 %. 

Alanna Donaldson led the Lady Bears with 17 points, while Brianasia Owens led the Lady Jags with 15 points. The Lady Bears had 3 student athletes in double figures while the Lady Jags had 6.

With the victory the Baton Rouge Lady Bears improve to 4-5, 2-2 in conference play, while Southern Shreveport falls to 4-2; 1-2 on the season.

Lady Bears Highlights:

Alanna Donaldson led all Lady Bears with 17 points, 5 Rebounds, 1 Assists and 6 steals

Tronayia Issac added 11 points 1 Rebound, 2 Assists and 3 Steals

Angel Bradford scored 10 points with 3 Rebounds, 4 Assists 

Frandreka Keller and Amani Barrow each scored 8 points.

 

Next up with be a in-state showdown with conference foes the Delgado Lady Dolphins on Wednesday March 3 at 5:30 pm in the Williamson Center.
