Lady Bears Win in OT

Lady Bears Win in OT

Thursday December 5, 2019: Women's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

It was an overtime thriller tonight, in the Bears Den, as the Baton Rouge Lady Bears and the Holmes Lady Bulldogs squared off in a region 23 rematch.  These teams meet on November 21st , when the Lady Bulldogs came up with the 64 to 56 victory in Goodman, Mississippi.  That meeting was a dog fight and tonight's contest was no different.

Holmes opened the game on a 6-0 run to take the early lead.  Baton Rouge scored their first bucket at 7:22 on a jump shot by Britanae White.  Both teams would struggle offensively, in the quarter.  The game was tied twice with the Lady Bears taking a two-point lead at the end of the quarter; 16-14.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair between the two teams as the game would be tied twice and see one lead change.  The Lady Bear failed to capitalize on free points by making only 4 out of 10 free throws.  The Lady Bulldogs would hold a three-point lead for most of the quarter until Bailey Antoine would hit a corner three at the buzzer to tie the game at 31 heading into halftime.

The third quarter was a repeat of the second quarter.  There were four ties and six lead changes.  Neither team held a lead greater than three points. At the end of the third quarter, the game was tied at 47.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears would take a late 60 to 59 lead with 48.2 seconds left.  The Lady Bears had their chance to ice the game, but their free throw struggles came back to haunt them as they could only make 1 of 2 in the last 14 seconds.  The Lady Bulldogs would drive to the bucket and convert on a layup to tie the game at 61 and force overtime.

In overtime, both teams turned up the pressure and both teams struggled to score points.  Holmes would get the offensive rebound and put back with 15. 5 seconds left to tie the game at 66.  The Lady Bears would call a timeout to discuss their final shot options.  Their original play call was broken up and the ball ended up in Freshman Guard Britanae White's hands as she would drive left to the basket and hit a floater at the rim to give the Lady Bears a 68 to 66 lead with 3 seconds left.  The Lady Bulldogs would get a good look at the basket, but their shot would rim out sealing the victory for the Lady Bears.

Holmes had 21 second chance points compared to 4 for Baton Rouge.  Holmes outscored Baton Rouge 44 to 26 in the paint.  Holmes shot 38 % from the field, while Baton Rouge shot 35.3 %.

The Lady Bears were led by Raven Franklin who had a double-00double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Holmes Lady Bulldogs were led in scoring by Jordan Manning and Gabrielle Bunch who each scored 19 points.

With the victory the Lady Bears improve to 2-8, while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-8 on the season.
