Bears split with Holmes Lady Bulldogs

Tuesday February 4,2025: Softball

Baton Rouge, La 

The Baton Rouge Bears opened their 2025 home schedule this afternoon with a doubleheader at Hartley vey Oak Villa Sports Complex against the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs. The Bears and the Bulldogs would split the day with the Bears winning game one 7-1 and the Bulldogs winning game two 4-0

Game One 

Holmes would get on the board first with a run in the third after they took advantage of some Bears fielding miscues. The Lady Bulldogs would load the bases but Maddie Robinson would get two strike outs and a pop fly to leave them stranded and limit the damage to only one run.

The Bears would get on the score board with a run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1.Baylie Romero would hit a double to left field and score on a Ashlyn Hebert double to centerfield.

The Bears Bats would come alive in the fifth inning when they would plate five runs to take a 6-1 lead. Maddie Robinson would lead off the inning with a walk, Kyla Ashford would reach on an error and Mary a Wicke would be hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Jardyn Wheeler would hit an infield single scoring Robinson. Rylee Guthrie would hit into a fielders choice scoring K Ashford. Baylie Romero would hit another double scoring Wicke and Wheeler. Romero would tag up and score on a Ashlyn Hebert pop fly for the Bears fifth run of the frame.

The Bears would stay hot at the plate in the sixth inning as they would score another run to increase their lead to 7-1. Mary Wicke would reach on a single and advance to third on a error. Wicke would score on a Jardyn Wheeler double to right field. After six innings the Bears led the Lady Bulldogs 7-1.

The Bears would get a great defensive performance in the top of the seventh when they would get the the out at first and throw the Lady Bulldog out at third trying to advance. Then they would get a line out to secure the 7-1 victory.

Maddie Robinson started on the mound for the Bears to earn the victory. Maddie pitched 7 innings allowing 1 run in 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8.A. Dartin started in the mound for the Lady Bulldogs and took the loss. She pitched 4.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. 

The Bears outhit the Lady Bulldogs 9 to 5. Both teams committed one error in the ballgame.

Bears Highlights:

Maddie Robinson went 2 for 3 with 1 walk and 1 run. Also pitched 7 innings with 8 strikeouts for the win.

Kyla Ashford had 1 run

Mary Wicke went 1 for 3 with 2 runs

Jardyn Wheeler went 2 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs

Rylee Guthrie had 1 RBI

Baylie Romero went 3 for 3 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 doubles

Ashlyn Hebert went 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs

Game Two

The Bears fell to the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 in game two of todays doubleheader at Hartley -Vey Oak Villa Sports Complex.

The Lady Bulldogs would get on the board first with two runs in the first inning, Holmes would take advantage of the Bears inconsistency in the circle. The Lady Bulldogs would add a run to their lead in the second when E Fabre would single,M Glasgow would reach on an error and Fabre would score on a bunt. After two inning, Holmes held a 3-0 lead over Baton Rouge. The Bears would make a bit of noise in the third innings when they would load the baseball with a single from Maddie Robinson m a walk from Kyla Ashford and a Fielders choice by Mary Wicke. The Bears would strand the runners on base. Holmes would add another run in the sixth inning when they would take advantage of a Bears error and a double by G Williams to plate a run, 4-0.

Ashton Duhon started in the circle  for the Bears and took the loss. She pitched 4.2 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 1. Briley LeBeouf (2.0 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. M. Swilley started in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs and earned the victory . She pitched 7 innings allowing 0 runs on 2 hits while walking and striking out 2.

 Holmes outhit Baton Rouge 6 to 2 but committed 4 errors compared to 3 for Baton Rouge.

Briley LeBeouf pitched two innings allow8 h 0 runs on 1 hit.

With the split the Bears improved to 2-4 while Holmes improved to 1-1 on the young season.

The Bears will continue their home stand this Thursday February 6, 2025 with a doubleheader against the Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears.
