Bears and Coyotes split doubleheader in Monroeville

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes met on the diamond this afternoon to conclude a four game home and home series. The Bears swept the Coyotes on April 4 while in Baton Rouge. This time around the Bears and Coyotes would split the doubleheader with the Bears winning game one 3-0 behind an 11 strikeout performance by Maddie Robinson and the Coyotes winning game two 3-0 behind an 11 strikeout performance by Megan Rose. It was  two great pitching performance displayed this afternoon in Monroeville.

Game One

Bears' pitcher Maddie Robinson kept the Coyotes out of sync at the plate all game, as she would strike out 11 and the Bears would get just enough offense to win game one 3-0.

The Bears would get on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. Hannah Abshire would hit a single up the middle, advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrie Shaw and score on a single by Ashlyn Hebert.

Baton Rouge would tact on another run, in the top of the second inning, when Molly Sistrunk would double to centerfield and score on a Coyotes's error when they could not handle Lily Wainwright infield single to third base.

In the top of the fourth, the Bears would load the bases with back to back singles by Molly Sistrunk and Lily Wainwright and a walk by Kennedy Kelly. Meaux Carroll would pinch hit for the Bears with the bases loaded and she would draw a walk scoring Sistrunk for the Bears third run of the game.

That was all the offense the Bears would need as they would win game one 3-0.

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears. She pitched a complete game to lead the Bears to the victory. She pitched 7 innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 11. K. Duke started in the circle for the Coyotes and was credited with the loss. She pitched 3.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 1.

Baton Rouge outhit Coastal Alabama North 9 to 5. The Bears committed two errors compared to one for the Coyotes.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Hannah Abshire went 2 for 3 with 1 run and 1 stolen bases. The one stolen base gives Hannah the BRCC Career Record for stolen bases with 26.

Ashlyn Hebert went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Molly Sistrunk went 3 for 3 with 1 run.

Lily Wainwright went 1 for 3.

Meaux Carroll had 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Kennedy Kelly has 2 BB.

 

Game Two

The tables were reversed, in game two, as the Coyotes' pitcher Megan Rose kept the Bears out of sync at the plate striking out 11 and the Coyotes would scratch across just enough runs to defeat the Bears 3-0, in game two of today's doubleheader.

The Coyotes would get on the board first with a run, in the second inning, to take the early lead. The Coyotes would tact on two more runs, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bears struggled offensively to get that timely hit to scratch across some runs thus falling 3-0 in game two.

Macy Castleman started in the circle for the Bears and was credited with the loss. Castleman pitched 2 innings allowing 1 run in 3 hits while striking out 1. Ashton Duhon (0.0 innings), Olivia Burns ( 2.1 innings) and Maddie Robinson ( 1.2 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. M. Rose started in the circle for the Coyotes and earned the victory. She pitched 7 innings allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 11.

Coastal Alabama North outhit Baton Rouge 5 to 3. Both teams committed one error in the ballgame.

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Aubrie Shaw went 1 for 3

Ashlyn Hebert went 1 for 3

Kylee Dulyea went 1 for 3.

Molly Sistrunk had 1 BB.

 

With the split the Bears improved to 24-22 while the Coyotes improved to 9-41 on the season. 

Special Note: With the game one victory by the Bears they have set a new program record for wins with 24. The previous record was 23 wins in the 2013 season.

Bears Softball will travel to Bossier City, Louisiana to take on the Bossier Parish Lady Cavs on Saturday April 27, 2024 in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
