Bears Basketball fall short in regular season finale to the Delgado Dolphins

The Baton Rouge Bears concluded their regular season schedule tonight against conference opponent the Delgado Dolphins, in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. The Bears and the Dolphins battled back and forth all game and in the end the  Dolphins would leave the Bears Den with a 61 to 60 victory over the Bears.

In the first half, the Bears and the Dolphins went back and forth.  It was an evenly matched game between the two ball clubs. In the first half, the game would be tied 4 times and would see 9 lead changes. After the game was tied at 12, with 11:52 remaining, the Dolphins would go on a 12 to 7 run to take their largest lead of the half five points: 24-19 with 5:03 remaining. The Bears would rally and would go on an 11 to 5 run to close out the half with a one-point lead over the Dolphins; 30-29.

The second half was as evenly matched as the first half. For the first eight minutes of the second half the Bears and the Dolphins traded buckets and traded the lead. Delgado would grow their lead to six points, the most of the second half, with 6:11 remaining;51-45. The Bears again would rally and tie the game at 56 with 1:51 to play when Jayhlon Young would convert a three-point play. With 24.4 second, the Bears had their chance to take the lead when Reginald Gause would be fouled.  Reggie would miss the front end of a one and one and the Dolphins would capture the rebound. The Bears had their chance again with 17.2 left in the game but they would fall short thus falling to the Delgado Dolphins 61 to 60, in their regular season finale.

Delgado was led in scoring by Jalvin Mitchell with a game high 25 points. Baton Rouge was led in scoring by Jayhlon Young with 23 points.

With the victory the Dolphins improve to  8-17, 1-8, while the Bears fall to 9-15, 3-6, on the season.

Bears Game Highlights:

Jayhlon Young led the Bears with 23 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assist and 4 steals

Kemar Benn had 13 points with 5 rebounds

Reginald Gause and Jordan Randall each added 6 points.

 

Next up for the Bears will be a Region XXIII tournament playoff game on Saturday February 26 at 6 pm, in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center, versus the Mississippi Delta Trojans

 

Before the game, the BRCC Athletic department and coaching staff honored the Bears Sophomores for the dedication and commitment to the program.  Those Sophomores included: Jordan Randall, Darian Pierce Jr., JaQualon Lovette, Jayhlon Young, Kemar Benn and Myles Frierson.
