Bears Basketball fall to SUSLA in Shreveport

The Baton Rouge Bears traveled up north to Shreveport to take on the Southern Shreveport Port City Jags, this afternoon, in a conference match up at Northwood High School. The Bears struggled to contain the Port City Jags, in the second half, leading to the 95-82 loss.

The first half was an evenly matched ball game between the two clubs. In the first half, the game was tied eight times and saw ten lead changes. The largest lead any one team had, in the first half, was four points. Both teams were aggressive on the defensive ends forcing turnovers which led to transition buckets. The Bears had great ball movement and was making that extra pass to get everyone involved and it paid off as they scored 42 first half points. The game would be tied at 40 with 52 seconds remaining when Bears freshman guard Jayhlon Young would sink two free throws to give the Bears a 42-40 lead. The Jags would tie the game at 42 with 40.3 seconds . Southern Sheveport would take a three-point lead when they would hit a three pointer as the clock expired to take a 45-42 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Port City Jags would open the half on a 10- 3 run to take a ten-point lead; 55 to 45 with 17:28 remaining. The Bears would pull within one; 62-61 with 12:32 remaining. Over the next five minutes the Jags would grow their lead back to 10 points;77-67 with 7:27 remaining. The Jags would use their advantage on the boards to dominate the paint. The Jags would extend their lead to 15 with 38 seconds remaining; 93-78. The Bears would fight till the end, but they were just overpowered by the Jags, in the second half, thus falling 95-82 this afternoon.

The Southern Shreveport Port City Jags improve to 7-14, 4-4 while Baton Rouge Bears fall to 9-14, 4-4 on the season. The Port City Jags won 2 of 3 conference games against the Bears this season.

The Bears will be back in action this Wednesday February 23 as they finish out the regular season with a match up against the Delgado Dolphins at 7:30 pm in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. On Wednesday, the Bears will honor these four sophomores :Jordan Randall, JaQualon Lovette, Darian Pierce Jr., and Myles Frierson.
