Overall Team Victory for the Bears over SUSLA

Wednesday February 9, 2022: Men's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

Despite being shorthanded, the Baton Rouge Bears used a total team effort to defeat the Southern Shreveport Port City Jags, this evening, in the Bears Den by the final score of 78 to 57.

In the first half, it was a battle between the two ball clubs, in which, both teams used multiple mini runs to take the advantage in the game. Southern Shreveport would score first, but Baton Rouge would tie the game with a three pointer by Reginald Gause with 15:49 remaining.  The game would be tied at 8 with 14:29 remaining. Southern Shreveport would then go on a 16-7 run to take a 24 to 15 lead over the Bears with 7:56 remaining. During the Port City Jags run they took advantage of the boards and grabbed multiple offensive boards leading to second chance points. The Bears were sluggish, in the first ten minutes, of the half on both ends of the floor.  The Bears would gain some momentum as they would go on a 9-0 run to tie the game at 24 with 5:55 remaining. The game would be tied again at 26. From there the Bears would close out the half on a 11-4 run to take a 37 to 30 lead into the half. The final run of the half by the Bears was sparked by 3- three pointers, 2 by Darian Pierce Jr. and 1 by Nomar Dijol.

In the second half, the Bears used that momentum that they gained from the run at the end of the first to fuel their energy and effort in the second half. The Port City Jags would pull within two points, 54 to 52 with 8:03 remaining but that was as close as they would get in the half.  The Bears clapped down on the defensive end coming out, in the second half, with full court defensive pressure.  The Bears limited the Port City Jags possession by dominating on the boards, in the second half.  The Bears also found a consistent stroke on the offensive end outscoring the Port City Jags 41 to 27, in the second half.  The Bears would earn the 78 to 57 victory this evening by playing as a complete team. It was a team effort as every Bears that played tonight scored at least one bucket and contributed on the defensive end of the floor.

The Bears were led in scoring by Darian Pierce Jr.  with 19 points. Natt led the Southern Shreveport Port City Jags with a game high 21 points.

With the victory the Bears improve to 8-12, 2-3 in conference play.
