Bears drop conference opener to Dolphins

Baton Rouge Bears could not overcome an early deficient as they fall to the Delgado Dolphins 76 to 69, in their conference opener, at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center.

 

Delgado jumped out early scoring the first 8 points of the game.  The Bears would finally get on the board with 2 points with 15:26 left to play, in the first half. The Bears struggled to keep the Dolphins off the offensive glass.  Delgado built their largest lead of the first half 14 points, with 10 minutes left to play; 23 to 9.  Baton Rouge would find a bit of a spark on the offensive end between, Cameron Massey, Dewey Shannon and Kaevon Jones.  The Bears would go on a mini 17 to 10 runs to close out the half.  At the half, the Dolphin led the Bears 38 to 31.

In the second half, the Bears would battle back and pull within one point 52-51 with 11:21 left to play.  The Bears had a chance to tie the ballgame, but Chan Nai made only one of two free throws.  The Bears continued to struggle, in the second half, on the boards.  They allowed Delgado multiple second chance opportunities at the basket and the Dolphins would take advantage.

Delgado would defeat Baton Rouge 76 to 68.

 

Delgado improves to 4-2 and 1-1 in conference play while the Bears fall to 2-3 and 0-1 in conference play.

Delgado was led in scoring by Donte Mitchell with 19 points. The Bears were led in scoring by Jayhlon Young with a game high 24 points.

 

Bears Highlights:

Jayhlon Young led all Bears with 24 points, 7 Rebounds, 5 Assist and 2 Blocks

Cameron Massey scored 18 points with 4 Rebounds, 4 Assist.

Kaevon Jones added 9 points with 8 Rebounds, 5 Assist and 1 steal

Dewey Shannon and Chan Nai both added 7 points.

 

 

Next up for the Bears will be a match up with conference rivals LSUE Bengals on Wednesday February 24, 2021 at 7:30 pm at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center.
