Bears fall to Region 23 Mississippi Gulf Coast

February 6, 2021: Men's Basketball

Perkinston, MS

The Baton Rouge Bears went on the road for the first time this season to face region 23 opponent the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs, in an afternoon contest.  A poor shooting performance and sloppy ball execution put the Bears in a hole early in the first half that they could not find their way out of.  Mississippi Gulf Coast defeats Baton Rouge by the final score of 76-54.

In the opening minutes of the first half, it was raining three's. Mississippi Gulf Coast hit 4 straight three pointers to grab the early 11 to 4 lead.  The Bears were plagued by  turnovers in the first half.  The Bears turned the ball over 11 times.  Gulf Coast would go on a 23 to 6 run, in the final nine minutes of the half, to take a 39 to 18 lead heading into halftime.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half for the Bears.  The Bulldogs sat back in a zone and force the Bears to take shots from the perimeter and those shots were not falling, while on the opposite end of the floor the Bulldogs were using those long rebounds to get out in transition and score some easy buckets.  Also, Gulf Coast hot streak from beyond the arc continued in the second half.  Mississippi Gulf Coast would win this region 23 contest by the final score of 76 to 54.

Baton Rouge shot 31 % from the field while Mississippi Gulf Coast shot 42.2 %.  Gulf Coast made 11 three pointers compared to 3 by the Bears.

With the victory the Bulldogs improve 3-2 to while the Bears fall to 1-2 on the season.
