Bears Baseball swept by Dallas College Brookhaven Bears

The Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) Bears faced the Dallas College Brookhaven Bears for the first time in team history this afternoon at Pete Goldsby Field. Unfortunately for the BRCC Bears, they struggled against the high-powered offense of the Brookhaven Bears, losing both games of the doubleheader, 16-6 and 10-1.
Game One
In the first game, the Dallas College Brookhaven Bears scored at least one run in six out of seven innings, leading to a 16-6 victory over the Baton Rouge Bears.
Brookhaven started strong, scoring four runs in the first inning to take an early lead. The BRCC Bears managed to respond in the bottom of the frame when Kenneth Berard was hit by a pitch, and Trent Laporte and Jackson Martin hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Brookhaven's pitcher balked, allowing Berard to score. After one inning, Brookhaven led 4-1.
Brookhaven added three more runs in the second inning, extending their lead to 7-1. In the third inning, Brookhaven hit a solo home run to left field by D. Stanley, making the score 8-1. The BRCC Bears found some success at the plate in the third inning, scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 8-4. Kenneth Berard led off the inning with a single, followed by a Brookhaven fielding error on Trent Laporte, and Jackson Martin's single loaded the bases again. Conner Kleinpeter brought in Berard with a sacrifice fly, followed by Peyton Chiasson with another sacrifice fly scoring Laporte. Hudson Heltz capped it off with a double to center field, scoring Martin.
Brookhaven continued its offensive onslaught, scoring five more runs in the fourth inning, which included a two-run homer to left field by A. Corey, extending their lead to 13-4. They added another run in the sixth, bringing the score to 14-4. The BRCC Bears fought back, scoring two runs in the sixth. Aidan Machado hit a single, followed by Kenneth Berard's double. Trent Laporte walked to load the bases once more. Machado scored on a passed ball, and Berard scored on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning, Brookhaven started with a solo home run by I. Nava, adding another run to make it 16-6. The BRCC Bears went down in order in the bottom of the inning, concluding the game with a 16-6 loss.
Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for BRCC and took the loss, pitching 2 innings and allowing 7 runs on 7 hits while walking 1. Conner Mayeux (1.2 innings), Kaiden Broussard (2.1 innings), and Cole Veronie (1.0 inning) provided relief. O. Overlin started for Brookhaven and earned the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.
Brookhaven outhit BRCC 18 to 7 and committed 1 error compared to 4 for BRCC.

Game Two
In the second game of the doubleheader, a huge third inning propelled the Brookhaven Bears to a 10-1 victory over the BRCC Bears.
Brookhaven opened the scoring with a run in the second inning and erupted for six runs in the third to take a commanding 7-0 lead. The BRCC Bears managed to get one run back when Jaxon Adams led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field. However, Brookhaven continued its success with three more runs in the fourth inning, capping off their scoring at 10-1. The Baton Rouge Bears struggled at the plate, failing to solve Brookhaven's pitching during the last four frames.
Klayton Wingfield started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits, with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Nash Tamplet (0.2 innings) and Grant Porche (4.0 innings) provided relief. C. Nixon started for Brookhaven and earned the victory, pitching 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts.
Brookhaven outhit BRCC 10 to 5, and Baton Rouge was credited with 5 errors in the game.

With their losses, the BRCC Bears fell to 1-9 on the season, while the Brookhaven Bears improved to 5-4. Brookhaven now leads the all-time series with 2 wins and 0 losses over Baton Rouge.
The Baton Rouge Bears will return to the field this Monday, February 10, 2025, to take on the #5 Pearl River Wildcats at Pete Goldsby Field for a single game starting at 2 PM.
