Bears fall in Region XXIII opener to the Nunez Pelicans.

The #3 seed Baton Rouge Bears opened the Region XXIII tournament this afternoon against the #2 seed Nunez Pelicans at Kirsch Rooney Stadium. A huge third inning by the Pelicans proved to be the downfall for the Bears as they fell 11-3, in the opener of the Region XXIII tournament.
The Pelicans took advantage of a couple of Bears' fielding errors to plate two runs, in the bottom of the second inning, to take the early 2-0 lead.
The Pelicans exploded for seven runs, in the bottom of the third inning, to take a 9-0 lead over the Bears. The inning was highlighted by a N. Detailed two run homerun to left field.
Bears would get on the board with three runs, in the top of the sixth inning. Barrett Hebert would pinch hit and hit a single up the middle. Jake Brouillette would pinch run for Hebert. Tanner Hornback would follow with a single to move the runners up sixty feet. Collin Dupre would hit a single up that middle that would ricochet off the Pelican's pitchers foot into right field. Brouillette would score on the play. Isaac Leger would single to left field driving home Hornback. Jackson Martin would hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and Dupre would tag and score on the play.
The Pelicans would tact on two more runs,in the bottom of the sixth inning, to increase their lead over the Bears to 11-3. The Bears would threaten, in the top of the seventh, when Braden McLin would lead off and reach by being hit by a pitch. Lane Patin would hit a sacrifice bunt to move McLin to second base. A wild pitch would advance McLin to third base. Tanner Hornback would be hit by a pitch that to put Bears on the corners. Collin Dupre would fly out to the shortstop to end the Bears threat and the game for the Bears. The Pelicans would earn the 11 to 3 seven inning run rule victory over the Bears.
Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Owen pitched 2.1 innings allowing 7 runs ( 2 earned) on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 3. Cade Robin (3.2 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. K. Broussard started on the mound for the Pelicans. Broussard pitched 5.1 innings allowing 3 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4.
Nunez outhit Baton Rouge 10 to 7. The Bears committed four errors in the ball game.

Collin Dupre went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.
Isaac Leger went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.
Jackson Martin went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.
Ryan Richard went 2 for 3.
Barrett Hebert went 1 for 1.
With the loss the Bears fell to 15-38 while the Pelicans improved to 24-22 on the season.
The Bears will conclude day one of the Region XXXIII tournament with a match up against the #1 seed Delgado Dolphins. The Bears need to defeat the Dolphins are their season will be done.
