Bears out slug the Nunez Pelicans for the doubleheader sweep

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans met this afternoon to conclude the regular season with two conference games at Noel Suarez Stadium on the campus of Chalmette High School. Runs were not at a premium today as the balls were flying out of Noel Suarez Stadium frequently this afternoon. The Bears would defeat the Pelicans 14-2, in game one, and rally late to win game two 14-13.

Game One

The offensive explosion by the Bears carried over from last night to today's first game of the doubleheader as they Bears would collect 10 hits and hit 3 homers enroute to the 14 to 2, five inning run rule victory over the Nunez Pelicans.

The Bears would pick up a run in the top of the first. Tanner Hornback would lead off  and take the first pitch he saw up the middle for a single. Isaac Leger would be hit by a pitch. Ryan Richard would hit a ground rule double that would score Hornback for the Bears first run of the game.

It was raining dingers, in the second inning, for the Bears. Tanner Hornback would hit a three run homer to left field then Collins Dupre would follow that with a solo shot to left field. The Bears would score four runs, in the inning, to take a 5-0 lead over the Pelicans.

The Bears would continue to stay hot at the plate as they would score five runs, in the top of the third inning, to increase their lead to 10-0.  Matthew Reinholtz would beat out an infield single and Max Veillon and Lane Patin would be hit by pitches to load the bases. Seth Fontenot would draw a walk with the bases loaded to score Reinholtz. Tanner Hornback would hit a sac fly to score Veillon. Collin Dupre would continue is hot streak at the plate as he would hit another homer to centerfield this time a three run homer.  

The Pelicans would get on the board,in the bottom of the third inning, via a solo homer to centerfield by A. Roux. The Pelicans would get another lead off solo homer in the fourth inning by C. Veron but they still trailed the Bears 10-2.

The Bears would add four more runs to their lead, in the top of the fifth inning; 14-2. Collin Dupre would lead off the inning with a single to right field. Ryan Richard would reach on an error by the third basemen and Dupre would score on the play. Matthew Reinholtz would single to left field scoring Richard. Max Veillon would be next and he would beat out  an infield single to the shortstop. Lane Patin would hit a single down the left field line scoring Reinholtz. Max Veillon would steal home for the fourth run of the frame for the Bears.

Bears' Pitcher Owen Ponthieux would get into a bit of trouble, in the bottom of the fifth, when the Pelicans would load the bases via a walk, single and hit by pitch. Ponthieux would get a strikeout and a double play to end the inning and the Pelicans threat.

Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for the Bears and pitched a complete five inning for the run rule victory. He pitched 5.0 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 8. Ira Austin started in the mound for the Pelicans and took the loss. He pitched 2 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.

Baton Rouge outhit Nunez 10 to 4. The Pelicans committed three errors in the ballgame.

 

Bears Game One Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 4 RBIs and 1 HR.

Collin Dupre went 3 for 4 with 3 runs, 4 RBIs and 2 HRs.

Isaac Leger went 1 for 2

Ryan Richard went 1 for 3 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Matthew Reinholtz went 1 for 3 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Max Veillon went 1 for 3 with 2 runs.

Lane Patin went 1 for 1 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 2 BB.

Seth Fontenot had 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB.

 

Game Two

The ball was flying out of Noel Suarez Stadium, in game two of today's doubleheader, as both teams combined to hit eight home runs. The Bears scored at least one run in sixth of the seventh innings. The Bears would out slug the Pelicans for the 14 to 13 victory.

The Bears would get on the board first with a run in the first inning. Collin Dupre would hit a double to left field and score on a single up the middle by Jackson Martin.

The Pelicans would plate eight runs, in the bottom of the first inning, to take an early 8-1 lead over the Bears. Five of the eight runs came off homers by A. Roux (3 run) and D. Jackson (2 run).

The Bears would load the bases, in the top of the third inning, with back to back singles by Collins Dupre and Isaac Leger and a walk by Jackson Martin. Braden McLin would clear the bases with a grand slam to centerfield. The Bears still trailed the Pelicans 8-5. The Pelicans would get a solo homer by A. Roux, his second of the ballgame, to extend their lead to 9-5, after three innings.

In the fourth inning, the Bears would plate three more runs to inch closer but they still trailed the Pelicans; 9-8. Braden Corkern would hit a solo homer to centerfield. Tanner Hornback and Collin Dupre would hit back to back singles for the Bears. Both Hornback and Dupre would pull off a double steal to put Bears at second and third. They would both score when Jackson Martin would reach on an error by the Pelicans second baseman. This would give the Bears a 9-8 lead over the Pelicans.

The Pelicans would retake the lead with four runs in the fourth inning;13-8.

The Bears would tact on a run, in the fifth inning, via a lead off homer by Braden McLin to centerfield. (This was McLin second homer of the game). Baton Rouge would put up a four spot, in the sixth inning, to tie the game at 13. Jacksonville Martin would walk and score on a Braden McLin ground out to third. Ryan Richard, who reached on a double to left field, would score on a Matthew Reinholtz infield single. Lane Patin would draw a walk and Braden Corkern would be hit by a pitch to load the bases with Bears. Tanner Hornback would hit a single to left field to drive in Reinholtz and Patin to tie the ball game.

Isaac Leger would lead off the seventh inning with a solo homer to centerfield to give the Bears the 14-13 lead. Bears pitcher Cade Robin would hold the Pelicans scoreless over the final three innings to preserve the Bears 14-13 comeback victory.

John Touchet started on the mound for the Bears. JT pitched .2 innings allowing 7 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. Cade Robin pitched 6.1 innings in relief for the Bears to earn the victory. Robin pitched 6.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Kylin Broussard started on the mound for the Pelicans. Broussard pitched 4 innings allowing 9 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2. Landon Cortez earned the loss for the Pelicans.

 

Baton Rouge outhit Nunez 15 to 12. Nunez committed two errors in the ballgame.

 

Bears Game Two Highlights

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 5 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Collin Dupre went 3 for 5 with 2 runs.

Isaac Leger went 2 for 5 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 HR.

Jackson Martin went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Ryan Richard went 1 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 BB.

Braden McLin went 2 for 5 with 2 runs, 6 RBIs and 2 HRs.

Matthew Reinholtz went 2 for 5 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Lane Patin had 1 run and 2 BB.

Braden Corkern went 1 for 3 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 HR.

 

With the pair of victories the Bears improved  to 15-37 while the Pelicans fell to 24-21 on the season.

 

Conference Standings ( as of 4/25/24)

Delgado 10-2 ( Tournament #1 seed)

Nunez 4-8  (Tournament #2 seed)

Baton Rouge 4-8 (Tournament #3 seed)


Because Nunez and Baton Rouge had the same conference regular season record a coin toss decide the #2 and #3 seed.
