Baton Rouge, LA: Baseball

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Holmes Community College Bulldogs met this afternoon in a midweek doubleheader at Pete Goldsby Field. The Bears would hold off a late rally by the Bulldogs to defeat Holmes 9-8 in game one. Holmes would carry over their game one momentum to game two as they would defeat Baton Rouge 7-3.

Game One

The Baton Rouge Bears would hold off a Holmes Bulldogs late inning rally to earn the 9 to 8 game one victory.

The Baton Rouge Bears would open the scoring with two runs, in the bottom of the first inning, to grab the early 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs. The Bears would take advantage of Holmes inconsistent pitching as the Bulldogs' pitcher would walk the bases loaded ( Matthew Reinholtz, Collin Dupre,Jackson Martin). Braden McLin would hit into a fielders choice scoring Reinholtz and Dupre for the Bears first runs of the ballgame.

The Bears would extend their lead to 6-0, when they would plate four runs, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Braden McLin would lead off and reach on an error, Isaac Leger and Seth Fontenot would draw walks to load the bases. Lain Patin would lay down a bunt which the Holmes pitcher would be unable to handle thus scoring McLin and Leger. Tanner Hornback  would hit a single to centerfield driving in Fontenot and Patin for the Bears third and fourth run of the frame.

The Bears would get back to back singles, in the bottom of the fifth, then Seth Fontenot would clear the bases with a three run homer over the scoreboard in left field. After five innings, the Bears led the Bulldogs 9-0.

The Holmes bats would come alive, in the top of the sixth inning, when they would plate seven runs to inch closer but they still trailed the Bears 9-7. The inning was highlighted by a three run homer to left field by H. Azemar. The Bulldogs would tact on a run in the top of the seventh but Bear's pitcher Caden Durand would end the rally with a strikeout and two fly ball outs to save the 9 to 8 game one victory.

John Touchet started on the mound for the Bears was earned the victory. JT pitched 4.2 innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. Cade Robin (1.1 innings) and Caden Durand (1 inning ) pitched in relief for the Bears. Durand earned the save for Bears. J.Fleming started on the mound for the Bulldogs and was credited with the loss. Fleming pitched 3.1 innings allowing 6 runs(5 earned) on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking out 1.

Holmes outhit Baton Rouge 14 to 7. The Bulldogs committed two errors in the ballgame.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Matthew Reinholtz went 1 for 3 with 1 BB and 1 run.

Collin Dupre had 1 run and 1 BB.

Braden McLin went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

Isaac Leger went 1 for 2 with 2 runs and 1 BB.

Ryan Richard went 1 for 3

Lane Patin went 1 for 2 with 1 BB, 1 Run and 2 RBIs.

Seth Fontenot went 1 for 1 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs, 1 BB and 1 homer.

 

Game Two

The Bears could not overcome the fast start by the Bulldogs thus dropping game two 7 to 3.

Holmes would ride the momentum they created in their game one rally into game two as they would open the scoring with three runs, in the top of the first inning, to take the early lead over the Bears. The Bulldogs would plate three more runs in the top of the second to increase their lead over the Bears to 6-0.

The Bears would break through with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning but they still trailed the Bulldogs 6-1. Isaac Leger would be hit by a pitch and he would score when Ryan Richard would reach on an error.

The Bulldogs would add an insurance run to their lead over the Bears, in the top of the seventh inning; 7-1.

The Bears would continue to fight as they would scratch two runs across in the bottom of the seventh but it was not enough as the Bulldogs would defeat the Bears 7 to 3 in game two of today's doubleheader. Isaac Leger would lead off the inning with a walk. Ryan Richard would follow with a double to centerfield but Max Veillon, who pinch ran for Leger would get thrown out at the plate. Shea Pitre would be next and he would reach via a walk. Tanner Hornback would hit an infield single driving in Richard. Matthew Reinholtz would be hit by a pitch to load the bases. Collin Dupre would draw a walk scoring Pitre. The Bulldogs would get the Bears to ground out to end the Bears rally and the ball game.

Briggs Ardoin started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Ardoin pitched 1.0 innings allowing 5 runs on 4 hits while walking 2. Cole Veronie (3.2innings ), Ethan Quebodeaux (1.1 innings) and Jackson Cowan (1 inning) pitched in relief for the Bears. H. Wedgeworth started on the mound for the Bulldogs and earns the victory. He pitched 5 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.

Holmes outhit Baton Rouge 8 to 6. Both teams committed one error in the ballgame.

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 3 for 4 with 1 RBI.

Collin Dupre had 1 RBI.

Jackson Martin went 1 for 4.

Isaac Leger had 1 BB and 1 Run.

Ryan Richard went 1 for 2 with 1 BB and 1 Run.

Braden Corkern went 1 for 2.

Shea Pitre had 1 run.

With the split the Bears improved to 10-34 while the Bulldogs improved to 11-25.

The Bears will travel to Alexandria to take on LSUA JV and Louisiana Christian JV on Monday April 15, 2024.
