Bears split with Pelicans to conclude home conference series

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans met this afternoon in a doubleheader to conclude their three game conference series. The Bears and the Pelicans would split the day with the Pelicans rallying for the 10-7 game one victory and the Bears would have an offensive explosion as they would defeat the Pelicans 13-2 for the game two run rule victory.

Game One

The Bears would start off strong but the Nunez Pelicans would rally for the 10-7 game one victory.

The Bears would threaten early when they would load the bases, in the first inning, via a single by Collin Dupre and back to back walks of Jackson Martin and Braden McLin but they would leave the bases loaded.

The Bears would capitalize, in the second inning, when they would plate four runs on four hits to take a 4-0 lead. Seth Fontenot would get things started with a double to left field and he would score on an Aidan Machado infield single and a Pelican's error. Tanner Hornback would follow with a single up the middle. Both Machado and Hornback would pull off the double steal to put runners on second and third for the Bears. Matthew Reinholtz would single down the left field line driving home Machado. Collin Dupre would draw a walk to load the bases. Jackson Martin would hit into a fielder's choice but Hornback and Reinholtz would score on the play for the Bears third and fourth run of the frame. Braden McLin would draw a walk and Isaac Leger would be hit by a pitch to reload the bases full of Bears. The Bears would bat through the whole lineup in the second inning.

The Pelicans would get on the board via a solo lead off homerun to left field and a two run homerun off the score board in left field, in the top of the third, but they still trailed the Bears 4-3.

The Pelicans would score four runs, in the top of the fourth inning, to grab the 7-4 lead over the Bears.

The Bears would claw back with a run, in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jackson Martin would single, Isaac Leger would walk and Max Veillon would hit an infield single to load the bases. Seth Fontenot would draw a walk to drive in Martin. After four innings, the Bears trailed the Pelicans 7-5.

The Pelicans would scratch across a run, in the top of the fifth inning, to increase their lead over the Bears to 8-5.

The Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent Pelicans pitching to load the bases, in the bottom of the fifth inning. Matthew Reinholtz would be hit by a pitch and Jackson Martin and Braden McLin would draw back to back walks. Reinholtz would score on a pass ball .The Bears would add another run when the Pelicans pitcher was called for a balk and Martin would score. After five innings, the Bears trailed the Pelicans 8-7.

The Pelicans would take advantage of a Bear's fielding error to add an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning; 9-7.   Nunez would add to their lead, in the top of the seventh, with a run to seal the 10-7 victory.

Reid Godchaux started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Godchaux pitched 3.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2. Cole Veronie (0.0 innings), Hudson Manuel (3.0innings) and Ethan Quebodeaux (.2 innings)pitched in relief for the Bears. O. Forbes started on the mound for the Pelicans. He pitches 1.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits while walking 4 and striking out 1.

Both teams collected 9 hits in the game. The Bears committed 2 errors while the Pelicans committed 1.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went  1 for 5 with 1 run.

Matthew Reinholtz went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Collin Dupre went 2 for 4.

Jackson Martin went 1 for 3 with 2 runs, 2 BB and 2 RBIs.

Max Veillon went 1 for 3 with 1 BB

Seth Fontenot went 2 for 3 with 1 run, 1BB and 1 RBI.

Aidan Machado went 1 for 1 with 1 run and 1 RBI.


Game Two

The Bears offense would come alive, in game two, as they would score at least a run in all four inning this afternoon while the Bears starting pitcher Owen Ponthieux kept the Pelicans off balance at the plate all game to lead the Bears to the 13 to 2, five inning game two victory.

The Bears would get on the board first with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, to take the early 4-0 lead. Tanner Hornback would lead off the inning with a walk, followed by a single to left field by Matthew Reinholtz and Collin Dupre would also draw a walk to load the bases with Bears. Jackson Martin would single scoring Hornback and Reinholtz for the first runs of the game. Isaac Leger would hit a two run homer to left field to extend the Bears lead to 4-0.

The Pelicans would scratch across a run in the top of the second inning but the Bears still held a 4-1 lead.

The Bears would add two runs to their lead in the bottom of the second; 6-1. Braden Corkern would double to left field and score on a Tanner Hornback double to centerfield. Matthew Reinholtz would trade places with Hornback as he would hit the Bears third double of the inning driving in Hornback for the Bears second run of the frame.

The Bears bats would stay hot as they would plate three more runs, in the bottom of the third inning, to increase their lead over the Pelicans to 9-1. Braden McLin would lead off the inning with a walk and he would score on a double to left field by Ryan Richard. Lane Patin would trade places with Richard as he would hit a double to left field driving in Richard. Braden Corkern and Matthew Reinholtz would draw walks to load the bases. Patin would score on a wild pitch.

Baton Rouge would close out their scoring with four more runs, in the bottom of the fourth, to extend their lead to 13-1 over the Pelicans. Collin Dupre would lead off the inning with an infield single and then steal second and score on an Isaac Leger single to left field. Ryan Richard would hit his second double of the game which would score Leger. Ryan Richard would steal third and eventually score on a wild pitch. Lane Patin would draw a walk and advance to second on a Jaxon Adams walk. Both runners would move up 90 feet on Pelicans wild pitch. Tanner Hornback would reach on a Pelicans error and Patin would score on the play.

Nunez would scratch across a run in the top of the fifth inning but it was not enough as the Bears would take the 13-2 run rule five inning game two victory.

Owen Ponthieux started on the mound for the Bears and earned the victory. He pitched 5 innings allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits while striking out 4. L. Cortez started on the mound for the Pelicans and took the loss. He pitched 1.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2.

Baton Rouge outhit Nunez 11 to 3. Both teams committed one error in the ball game.

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Tanner Hornback went 1 for 3 with 2 runs, 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Matthew Reinholtz went 2 for 2 with 1 run, 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Collin Dupre went 1 for 2 with 1 BB.

Jackson Martin went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Braden McLin had 1 run with 1 BB.

Isaac Leger went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 homer.

Ryan Richard went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.

Lane Patin went 1 for 2 with 2 runs, 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Braden Corkern went 1 for 1 with 1 run and 1 BB.

 

With the split the Bears improved to 9-33 while the Pelicans improved to 15-16 on the season.

The Bears will host the Holmes Community College Bulldogs in a doubleheader on Tuesday April 9, 2024. The doubleheader will start at 1 pm at Pete Goldsby Field.
