Bears sweep Pelicans in a marathon day in Chalmette

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans met this afternoon at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette to start a three game conference series. The Bears would end today's marathon of a day with a sweep of the Nunez Pelicans. Both seven innings games took a combined six and half hours to complete. The Bears would come back to win game one 10-9 and game two 16-10.

Game one

The Bears would come back to take the lead in the top of the seventh and Gavin Green would close out the Pelicans to secure the 10-9 comeback victory.

The Bears would come out the gates swinging this afternoon, in game one. The Bears would plate four runs, in the first inning. Blaise Foote would lead off with a walk and Braxton Gallet would be hit by a pitch. Elliot Hebert would double down the left field line scoring Foote. Ethan Menard would hit a sac fly to centerfield driving in Gallet. Lane Hutchinson would clear the bases with a two-run homer to centerfield. Nunez would respond in the bottom of the first with two one; one via a solo homer by L. Leblanc. After one inning the Bears led the Pelicans 4-2. The Pelicans would tie the game and take the lead in the second inning with five runs: 7-4. The Bears would scratch a run across, in the third inning, when they would load the base and they would score on a Nick Carriere fielder's choice. The Pelicans would add to their lead in the bottom of the third via a solo homer by B. Sers to centerfield. After three innings, the Pels lead 8-5. In the fourth inning, the Bears would pull within one with a two-run homer to right field by Blaise Foote;8-7. The Pelicans would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning; 9-7. The Bears would tie the game, in the seventh inning, via a two-run homer to left-center by Ethan Menard. Also in the seventh, the Bears would score another run on a Pelicans throwing error to take a 10-9 lead. Gavin Green would pitch, the seventh inning, for the Bears and shutdown the Pelicans by getting a ground out and two strikeouts to preserve the 10- 9 Bears victory.

Teddy Webb started on the mound for the Bears. Teddy pitched one and one third innings allowing 7 runs on 6 hits while striking out 1. Alex Norris pitched in relief for the Bears and earned the victory. Alex pitched four and two thirds' innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 9. Gavin Green  also pitched in relief for the Bears and earned the save. Gavin threw one inning facing three batters and striking out two of them. L. Brewster started on the mound for the Pelicans. G. Goodbye took the loss for the Pelicans. He allowed 1 run on 1 hits.

Nunez outhit Baton Rouge 11 to 10. The Bears committed two errors compared to 1 for the Pelicans. Baton Rouge hit 3 homers in the game, while Nunez hit 4 homers.

Game One Bears Highlights 

Blaise Foote went 1 for 2 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 1 HR

Elliot Hebert went 2 for 3 with 3 runs and 1 RBI 

Ethan Menard went 1 for 4 with 1 run, 3 RBIs and 1 HR

Lane Hutchinson went 3 for 4 with 1 run, 2 RBIs and 1 HR

Nick Carriere went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI

Jonas LeBourgeois went 1 for 3 with 1 run 

 

Game Two

The Bears had their offense firing on all cylinders, this evening, as they would score at least one run in every inning enroute to the 16-10 victory.

The Bears would get on the board with two runs, in the first inning, via a 2 RBI double off the left field wall by Lane Hutchinson. The Pelicans would score two runs, in the bottom of the first inning, to tie the game at two. The Bears would retake the lead, in the second inning, via a solo homer to centerfield by Tristan Frederick. The Pelicans would score a run, in the bottom of the second, to tie the game at three. Ethan Menard would lead off, the third inning, with a homer to left field to give the Bears the lead again. The Bears would plate four runs total, in the third inning, to take a 7-3 lead. Lane Hutchinson would hit a double, steal third and score on a Pelicans throwing error. Tristan Frederick would hit a single, steal second and third and he would score on a throwing error. Nick Carriere would walk, steal second and third and he would score on another Pelicans throwing error. The Nunez Pelicans would respond with three runs, in the bottom of the third, to pull within one run of the Bears: 7-6. Gage Breithaupt would lead off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field to extend the Bears lead to 8-6. The Bears would load the bases, in the fifth inning, and the Pels would walk Ethan Menard driving in a run. Gage Breithaupt would single to centerfield driving in two more runs for the Bears. The Bears would score three runs, in the fifth inning, to increase their lead to 11 to 6. The Pelicans would scratch two runs across in the fifth inning, but they still trailed the Bears 11 to 8. The hits would keep coming as they Bears would continue to stay hot at the plate as they would score three more runs, in the sixth inning, to extend their lead to 14-8. Nick Carriere would hit a two-run homer to right field. Jacob Dunn would single, be moved over to second on a Britt Jordan infield ground out and score on a Braxton Gallet double up the middle. The Pelicans would continue to fight as they would scratch two more runs across in the sixth inning. After six innings, the Bears held a 14-10 lead over the Pelicans. The Bears would stay hot as Mason Long would hit a solo homer to left field, in the top of the seventh inning. Lane Hutchinson would hit a double, steal third and score on a throwing error for the Bears second run of the frame. John Shahrdar would shut the door on the Pelicans, in the seventh, to secure the 16 to 10 victory.

Caden Akana started on the mound for the Bears and earned the victory. Caden pitched two and two thirds' innings allowing 6 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5. Case Roark  ( 2 innings) and John Shahrdar (2 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. J. Brasseaux started on the mound for the Pelicans and took the loss. He pitched two and two thirds' innings allowing 7 runs on 7 hits.

 

Baton Rouge outhit Nunez 15 to 12. Nunez committed 6 errors compared to 1 for Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge hit five homers in the game while Nunez hit 1.

 

Game Two Bears Highlights

Braxton Gallet went 3 for 5 with 1 run, 1 BB and 1 RBI 

Elliot Hebert went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 BB

Ethan Menard went 1 for 3 with 1 run, 2 RBIs, 1 BB and 1 HR

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 3 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs, 1 BB and 1 HR

Mason Long went 1 for 1 with 1 run and 1 HR

Lane Hutchinson went 3 for 5 with 2 runs, 2 RBIs and 2 doubles

Tristan Frederick went 2 for 4 with 3 runs, 1 RBI and 1 HR

Nick Carriere went 1 for 3 with 2 runs, 2 BB, 2 RBIs and 1 HR

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 4 with 1 BB and 2 Runs

Britt Jordan had 3 BB


With the sweep the Bears improve to 26-29, 5-6, while the Pelicans fall to 24-19, 2-9 on the season. With today's sweep the Bears have locked in the #2 seed for next weekend's Region 23 tournament. The Pelicans will be the #3 seed. The Delgado Dolphins hold the #1 seed.

 

The Bears and the Pelicans will conclude their three-game series tomorrow May 1, 2022, with a single nine inning game starting at 3 pm at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette, La.
