Bears split with Bulldogs

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs met this afternoon in a doubleheader at Pete Goldsby Field.  This was a rematch of an earlier game played at Mississippi Gulf Coast this season, in which, the teams split.  Today was like the first meeting between these ball clubs with Mississippi Gulf Coast winning game one 9-3 and the Bears winning game two 11-5.

 

Game One

The Baton Rouge Bears struggled defensively to control the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs thus falling 9-3, in game one of today's doubleheader.

Mississippi Gulf Coast would score first with three runs, in the first inning. The Bulldogs would tact on a run, in the second inning, to take a 4-0 lead.  In the third inning, Mississippi Gulf Coast would add four more runs to their lead.  After three innings, the Bulldogs led 8-0. The Bears would finally get on the board with three runs, in the six inning, but still trailed 8-3. The Bears would load the bases with a single by Gage Breithaupt, a hit by pitch by Nick Carriere and a single by Braxton Gallet. Jacob Dunn would hit a single scoring two runs. Gallet would score on a wild pitch for the third Bears run of the inning.  The Bulldogs would add an insurance run, in the seventh inning, to secure the 9-3 game one victory.

Luke Reed earned victory for the Bulldogs.  He pitched seven innings allowing 3 run on 7 hits while striking out 7. Gavin Green started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Gavin pitched three inning allowing 8 runs on 6 hits while striking out 2. Ethan Menard, Connor Wilson, and Alex Norris pitched in relief for the Bears.

Both teams scattered 7 hits but Baton Rouge committed 4 errors.

Game One Bears Highlights

Trey Webb went 1 for 4

Gage Breithaupt went 2 for 2 with 1 run

William Dunn went 1 for 3

Tristan Frederick went 1 for 4

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 1 with 1 run

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs

 

Game Two:

In the nightcap, the Baton Rouge Bears played a totally different game than in game one.  The Bears put all three phases of the game together to earn the 11 to 5 victory. The Bears flashed the leather on defense, had timely hitting and great pitching performaces to earn the split.

Baton Rouge would get on the board with two runs, in the first inning. Ethan Menard would lead off with a double to left field. Trey Webb would follow with an RBI triple to right field. Gage Breithaupt would hit a sac fly scoring Webb. The Bears would stay hot, in the second inning, and plate two more runs. William Dunn would lead off the inning with a triple and score on a wild pitch. Jacob Dunn would reach on a walk, steal second and score on an infield ground out by Ethan Menard. After two innings, the Bears led 4-0. Mississippi Gulf Coast would scratch two runs across, in the fourth inning, but still trailed 4-2. Baton Rouge would tact on three runs to their lead, in the fifth inning. The highlights of the fifth inning were an RBI triple by Nick Carriere and a 2-run homer by Tristan Frederick. After five innings, the Bears led 7-2. Mississippi Gulf Coast would drive across a run, in the sixth inning, but the Bears would respond with two runs, in the bottom of the frame, to take a 9-3 lead. Jacob Dunn would lead off with a single and score on an Ethan Menard single. Brit Jordan, who reached on a hit by pitch would score on a sac bunt by Gage Breithaupt.  Baton Rouge would manufacture a run, in the seventh inning, when Nick Carriere would reach by being hit by a pitch, he would steal second and third and score on a pass ball. In the eighth inning, the Bears would add an insurance run with an RBI single by Trey Webb.  The Bulldogs would not go away quietly, in the ninth, as they would score two runs, but it was not enough as the Bears would win the nightcap 11-5.

Caden Akana started on the mound for the Bears and earned the victory. Caden pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7. Case Roark and Sean Burkhead pitched in relief for the Bears. Noah Nicholson earned the loss for the Bulldogs. He pitched one inning allowing 4 runs on 4 hits.

Baton Rouge outhit Mississippi Gulf Coast 11 to 8. Mississippi Gulf Coast committed 2 errors in the ballgame.

Game Two Bears Highlights:

Ethan Menard went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs,1 run and 1 double

Trey Webb went 3 for 5 with 1 run, 2 RBIs, 1 double and 1 triple

William Dunn went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 triple

Tristan Frederick went 1 for 4 with 1 run, 2 RBIs and 1 Homerun

Nick Carriere went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI, 2 Runs and 1 triple

Gage Breithaupt had 2 RBIs

Jacob Dunn went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 BB

Braxton Gallet went 1 for 1

 

With the split, Baton Rouge improves to 12-13 while Mississippi Gulf Coast improves to 4-8 on the season.

 

The Bears will be back in action this Saturday March 5 as they travel to Ellisville, Mississippi to take on Jones College in a doubleheader starting 2 pm at Community Bank Park.
