Bears and Eagles split doubleheader at Goldsby

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Hinds Community College Eagles met, in a doubleheader, this Mundi Gras at Pete Goldsby Field. The Bears and the Eagles would split the doubleheader with the Bears winning game one 8-2 and the Eagles winning game two 10-1.

Game One

Bears lefty pitcher Ethan Prescott kept the Hinds Eagles off balanced at the plate all game long and the Bears bats produced enough offensive support to take the 8-2 game one victory.

Hinds would get on the board first with a run, in the first, for the early lead. The Bears would finally get on the board, in the fourth inning, when they put up a four spot.  Blaise Foote would walk and advance to third on a Tristan Frederick single to right field. Braden Keen would lay down a sac bunt and reach on a Eagle's error. During that play Foote would score. Frederick would score on a wild pitch and Keen would score when he would steal home. Caden Akana, who reached on a Hit by Pitch would also score on the triple steal by the Bears. After four innings, the Bears led 4-1.  The Bears would tact on four more runs to take an 8-1 lead after five innings. Nick Carriere would lead off the inning by reaching on an error, then he would steal second and third and score on a Lane Hutchinson single. Tristan Frederick would strike again with an RBI single to right field. Frederick would then steal second and third and score on a Braden Keen single to left field. Caden Akana would reach on an infield single scoring Keen for the Bears fourth run of the frame. Hinds would score a run, in the sixth, via a J. Rodriguez homer to left field. Hinds would get some traffic on the bases, in the seventh inning, but Prescott and the Bears defensive would get out of the inning unscathed. The Bears win game one 8-2.

Ethan Prescott pitched a complete game for the Bears to earn the victory. The lefty pitched seven innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits while striking out 4.  Gage Bihm earned the loss for the Eagles. He pitched three and a third innings allowing 4 runs on 2 hits while striking out 5.

Baton Rouge outhit Hinds 8 to 6. Hinds committed 2 errors in the ball game. The Bears stole 14 bases.

Game One Bears Highlights

Ethan Menard went 1 for 4

Lane Hutchinson went 2 for 4 with 1 Run and 1 RBI

Tristan Frederick went 2 for 2 with 2 runs and 1 RBI 

Braden Keen went 1 for 2 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs

Caden Akana went 1 for 2 with 1 run and 1 RBI

 

Game two

The Baton Rouge Bears fell behind early to the Hinds Eagles and could not catch up as they fall 10-1 in game two of today's doubleheader.

Hinds would get on the board first with a run in the first inning. Baton Rouge would respond with a run, in the bottom of the first, to tie the game. Trey Webb would lead off with a single and he would steal second. Blaise Foote would reach on an error and Webb would score on an error by the Eagles pitcher for the Bears first and only run of the game. The Eagles would score 4 runs, in the third inning, 1 in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the seventh and eighth inning to cap off their 10-1 victory. The Bears struggled to make an adjustment at the plate striking out 9 times and only scattering five hits in the game.

 

Holland Townes earned the victory for the Eagles. He pitched three innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 2. Slade Zeppuhar started on the mound for the Bears and took the loss. Slade pitched three innings allowing 5 runs on 6 hits while striking out 5. Grant Landry, Luke Evans, Mason Long and John Shahrdar all pitched in relief for the Bears.

Hinds outhit Baton Rouge 12 to 5. The Eagles committed 3 errors compared to 4 by the Bears in the ball game.

Game Two Bears Highlights

Gage Breithaupt went 1 for 2

Ethan Menard went 2 for 2

 

With the split Baton Rouge improves to 11-12, while Hinds improves to 7-4 on the season.

 

The Bears will be back in action this Wednesday March 2 as they face the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm at Pete Goldsby Field.
