Bears Baseball earns split at #1 LSUE Bengals

The Bears and the Bengals continued their series this afternoon on the Cajun Prairie in Eunice, Louisiana.  The Bears and the Bengals would split the day's doubleheader.  The Bears would win game one 12 to 9 and the Bengals would win game two 8 to 0.

 

Game One:

The Baton Rouge Bears used a bit of gorilla ball to capture the 12 to 9 game one victory over the nationally ranked LSUE Bengals this afternoon in Bengals Stadium.  The duo of William Veillon and Parker Autry would hit 4 homeruns driving in 8 runs. The Bears would hit five homers in game one.

The Bears would get on the board first, in the first inning, via a Nathan Carriere solo homer to left field. The Bengals would respond with three runs, in the bottom of the first, to grab a 3 to 1, lead after one. The Bears would find their offensive stroke again, in the third inning, when they would score a run to inch closer;3-2. William Veillon would drive in Cody Crifasi with a single to left field. Crifasi had reached on a single up the middle. The Bears would tie the game when Parker Autry would hit a sac fly scoring Hutchinson, who reached on a single.  The Bears would add another run, in the fourth, to take a 4 to 3 lead.   William Dunn would reach on a beautiful bunt single, advance to second on a wild pitch, advance to third on Autry's sac fly and score on a sac bunt by Crifasi. The Bears would extend their lead, in the sixth inning when William Veillon would hit a two-run homer to right field. The Bears would add another run in the frame when Nathan Beyer would score on a Lane Hutchinson sac fly to centerfield.  The Bengals would add a run, in the fifth, but they still trailed the Bears 7 to 4.

The Bengals would score three runs ,in the sixth, to tie the game at 7.  The Bears would respond and score three runs, in the seventh inning, to take a 9 to 7 lead. Lane Hutchinson would double to left field, advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a sac bunt by Deionte Norris.  Then Parker Autry would follow up with a solo homer to left field. William Veillon would add a bit of insurance to the Bears' lead with a two-run homer, in the eighth, to take a 11 to 7 lead. LSUE would add a run in the eighth.  After eight innings, the Bears led 11 to 8.  Parker Autry would seal the Bears victory with a solo homer to left field, in the ninth.  The Bengals would add a run, in the ninth, via a Jones homer to left field, but it was not enough to overcome the offensive explosion by the Bears.  Baton Rouge would defeat the #1 LSUE Bengals by the final score of 12 to 9.

Blaine Hardy pitched three and a third innings in relief for the Bears to earn the victory. Blaine allowed 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 3. Jacob Poe started on the mound for the Bears. Poe pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing 7 runs on 10 hits while striking out 3.

Baton Rouge out hit LSUE 14 to 12. Baton Rouge was credited with 2 errors in the ball game.

Bears Game 1 Highlights:

 Nathan Carriere wet 2 for 4 with 3 Runs, 1 RBI and 1 HR.

William Veillon went 3 for 5 with 2 Runs, 5 RBIs and 2 HR

Lane Hutchinson went 3 for 5 with 2 Runs and 1 RBI.

William Dunn went 1 for 2 with 1 Run.

Parker Autry went 2 for 3 with 2 Runs, 3 RBIs and 2 HR

Creed David went 1 for 4.

Cody Crifasi went 2 for 4 with 1 Run and 1 RBI.

 

Game Two:

The Bears bats went cold and they were unable to find that timely hit to score runs in the second game. The Bengals capitalized on the Bears' offensive struggles. The Bengals found their offense stroke in game twp by scoring at least a one in four of the six innings this afternoon enroute to an 8 to 0 shutout game two victory.

The Bengals would get things started, in the second inning, with a two-run homer by Makarus to take an early lead in which they would not relinquish.  LSUE would add a run in the third;3-0. The Bears would have their chances on a few occasions tonight but would strand the bases loaded.  Markarus would homer again, in the fourth inning, giving the Bengals a 4-0 lead. The Bengals would add another run in the fourth, and 3 runs, in the fifth, to secure the 8 to 0 game two victory.

Cade Hart earned the victory for the Bengals. He pitched six innings allowing 0 runs on 4 hits. Peter Holden took the loss for the Bears. Peter pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing 5 runs on 7 hits while striking out three. Deionte Norris, Sean Burkhead and Blaise Foote all pitched in relief for the Bears.

LSUE outhit Baton Rouge 11 to 5. LSUE was credited with 1 error in the ballgame.

 

Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Karius Joseph went 1 for 2 with 1 BB.

Parker Autry went 2 for 3.

Jonas LeBourgeois went 1 for 1.

Cody Crifasi went 1 for 2.

 

With the split, the Bears improve to 22-18, 6-2 in conference play while the LSUE Bengals improve to 36-4 on the season.

 

Next up for the Bears will be a Wednesday April 14 conference showdown with the Delgado Dolphins at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in New Orleans. The doubleheader will begin at 4 pm.
