Bears drop two to Meridian

Bears drop two games to Meridian Community College Eagles. Big innings by the Eagles and errors by the Bears propelled Meridian to their victories this afternoon.

Meridian Eagles used two big innings to down Baton Rouge in Game 1 , 11 to 1, in a five inning run rule victory. The Bears got on the board first when Seth Daugherty doubled and was driven in by a Hunter David single. Bears took an early 1 to 0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. Meridian erupted for five runs, in the third inning, which included a homerun by B. Morris. After three innings, Meridian held a 5 to 1 lead over Baton Rouge. The Eagles would add five more runs to their lead, in the fourth inning, to take a commanding 10 to 1 lead. They would also score one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game via the run rule 11 to 1. 

Luke Wallner got the win for Meridian pitching five innings allowing one run on seven hits and striking out seven Bears. Michael Russell got the loss for the Bears pitching three innings allowing five runs, which three were earned .

Seth Daugherty went 2 for 3 with 1 run

Tyler Caston went 1 for 2

 

Similar to game one, Meridian would use two big innings to down Baton Rouge 12 to 2, in  a six inning run rule victory. Meridian would get on the board with six runs in the second inning and would not look back.  After two innings, the Eagles led the Bears 6 to 0. The Bears would add one run in the third inning, when Jonah Overland would walk and eventually score on a Lee Whitaker single to center field.  After three innings the Bears trailed 6 to 1. The Eagles would add another run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7 to 1. The Bears would get their second run of the game in the fifth inning, when Seth Daughtery would get on with a bunt single and scored on a Hunter David ground out to second.  Meridian would answer in the bottom of the fifth with four runs to extend their lead to 11 to 2. The Eagles would score one run in the six making it 12 to 2 and ending the game due to the run rule. Final score Eagles 12 and Bears 2.

Evan Becnel took the loss for the Bears pitching two innings allowing 6 runs on 6 hits and striking out 3. J. Bridges got the win for the Eagles pitching 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 4. 

Game 2: Bears Highlights:

Seth Daugherty went 1 for 4 with 1 run

Jonah Overland went 1 for 1 with 1 run

Hunter David had 1 RBI

Lee Whitaker went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.

 

The Bears will be back in action Saturday March 3, 2018 when they travel to Biloxi, MS to play Illinois Central College at 3 pm and Mississippi Gulf Coast at 6 pm.  The games will be played at MGM Field.
