Baseball Splits With SW

Baseball Splits With SW

Baseball was back in action on Friday after a week of rain postponed the Bears multiple times. BRCC traveled to Southwest Mississippi Community College for a doubleheader. Friday's games were the first for the Bears since they swept Southern last weekend in a two game series.

The Bears won game one due to a strong pitching performance from hurler John Schaffer. The freshman, right hander gave up no runs on four hits and no walks. BRCC capitalized on his dominance with a 5-0 win over Southwest. Mark Traylor Jr. and Steven Bright each had two RBI's for the Bears to provide the offense needed for the win.

Game two saw the Bears lose in eleven innings by a 1-0 margin. Sophomore Kelby Blalock pitched eight shutout innings for BRCC, giving up seven hits. His performance was followed by Andre Liotta, the freshman took the mound in relief and threw three solid innings. He gave up one hit and the winning run crossed the plate due to a throwing error in the eleventh.

The split versus Southwest brings the Bears season record to 3-11; however, with the solid pitching performances of late, BRCC has won three of their last four games. Up next for the baseball team is a doubleheader at Jones County Junior College on Saturday, March 1st.
