Bears drop Slugfest at Nunez

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Nunez Pelicans met this evening to start a three game conference series at Noel Suarez Stadium on the campus of Chalmette High School. Despite a hot night at the plate with 19 hits and 4 homeruns the Bears fell to the Pelicans 15-14.

The Pelicans would get on the board first via a two run homerun to centerfield by C.Cure to take the early 2-0 lead after one inning.

The Bears would tie the game, in the top of the fourth inning, when they would plate two runs. Collin Dupre would lead off the inning with a solo shot to left center for the Bears first run of the ball game. Jackson Martin would single, advance to second on a balk and score when the Pelicans catcher would try to catch him stealing third but his throw would sail into left field.

Nunez would retake the lead, in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a lead off solo homer by J. Lacava. The Pels led the Bears 3-2, after four innings.

The Bears would claw back and retake the lead when they would plate four runs, in the top of the fifth inning. Matthew Reinholtz would hit a double up the middle. Collin Dupre would be next and he would hit a two run homer to centerfield. It would be  Dupre second homer of the game. The Bears would get back to back to back singles by Isaac Leger, Jackson Martin and Ryan Richard to load the bases. Max Veillon would single to left field driving in Leger. Seth Fontenot would hit a sac fly to deep centerfield to drive in Martin for the Bears fourth run of the frame. In the middle of fifth inning, the Bears held a 6-3 lead over the Pelicans.

Nunez would pick up a run,in the bottom of the fifth inning, but they still trailed the Bears 6-4.

The Bears would add to their lead,in the sixth inning, when they would load the bases via back to back singles by Lane Patin and Tanner Hornback and a walk by Collin Dupre. Isaac Leger would be next and he would hit the ball over the fence onto the football field for a grand slam. The Bears led the Pels 10-4.

The hits and runs came coming for the Bears, in the top of the seventh inning. Max Veillon would lead off the inning with a double up the middle. Seth Fontenot would hit a bunt single that would move Veillon to third. Lane Patin would hit a double inside the left field line scoring Veillon and moving Fontenot to third. Tanner Hornback would keep the bats rolling with a single to left field scoring Fontenot. Matthew Reinholtz would hit a sac bunt to drive in Patin.  The Bears led the Pels 13-4.

Nunez would fight back to plate nine runs, in the bottom of the seventh inning, to tie the ball game at 13.

After taking a blow, in the seventh inning, the Bears would respond to retake the lead with a solo homer to centerfield by Ryan Richard. Similar to previous innings, the Pelicans would respond to score two runs, in the bottom of the eighth inning, to retake the lead; 15-14. The Bears would go down in order, in the ninth inning, thus falling 15-14 to the Nunez Pelicans.

Reid Godchaux started on the mound for the Bears. Godchaux pitched 4.1 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) off 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4. Braden McLin ( 1.2 innings), Hunter Lail (0.0 innings), Caden Durand (2.0 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. Caden Durand was credited with the loss for the Bears. E. Woodard started on the mound for the Pelicans. Woodard pitched 4.1 innings allowing 6 runs (5 earned ) on 8 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6. 

Baton Rouge outhit Nunez  19 to 18. The Bears committed three errors compared to one for the Pelicans.

Bears Game Highlights

Matthew Reinholtz went 1 for 5 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Collin Dupre went 4 for 4 with 3 runs, 3 RBIs, and 2 HR.

Isaac Leger went 2 for 5 with 2 runs, 4 RBIs and a grand slam HR

Jackson Martin went 2 for 5 with 2run.

Ryan Richard went 3 for 4 with 1 BB, 1 run and 1 HR.

Tanner Hornback went 2 for 6 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Max Veillon went 2 for 5 with 1 RBI and 1 run.

Seth Fontenot went 1 for 3 with 1 run, 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Lane Patin went 2 for 5 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

 

With the loss the Bears fell to 13-37 while the Pelicans improved to 24-19 on the season.

The Bears and the Pelicans will finish off their three game conference series on Saturday April 27 with a doubleheader starting at 1 pm at Noel Suarez Stadium.
