Lady Bears start 2020 with a Victory

January 4, 2020

Baton Rouge, LA

The turning of the calendar year brought good fortune for the Baton Rouge Lady Bears.  They defeated the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears 55 to 52, this afternoon in the Bonne Santé Wellness Center.

Both squads showed the effects of the holiday break, in the first quarter. BRCC Lady Bears had a bit more rust to knock off, as the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears broke open the game with a 19 to 9, first quarter lead.  Baton Rouge settled down and found their stroke in the second quarter. They would outscore Southwest 12 to 9, in the second quarter, to close the gap at halftime to 28 to 21.  In the third quarter, Baton Rouge continued to chip away at Southwest's lead.  A bucket by Jennifer Carter tied the game at 39 with 42.7 seconds left in the third.  Southwest would hit a half court buzzer beater to take a 42 to 39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.  At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Southwest would extend their lead to six points, but Baton Rouge continued to fight and tied the game at 49 with three minutes left to play. Southwest would regain the lead at 52 to 51.  On the next Lady Bears possession, Antiesha Griffin would hit a top of the key jumper to give Baton Rouge the 53 to 52 lead.  In the final seconds of the game, A'Zia Reed would steal the ball and get fouled.  She would make two free throws to seal the 55 to 52 victory for the Baton Rouge Lady Bears.

The game was not pretty on both ends of the floor for both teams, but Baton Rouge would fight together, as a team, and do what they needed to pull off the upset region 23 victory this afternoon.
