Panola College Sweeps Baton Rouge in Opening Weekend

The Panola Ponies earned a three game sweep of the Baton Rouge Bears, in the opening weekend of the 2019 season.  Panola defeats BRCC  9 to 4 in game 1, 12 to 2 in game 2 and 15 to 6 in game 3.  The Panola Ponies were firing on all cylinders of the game.  They used some clutch hitting, 8 homers on the weekend, some great pitching and defense to defeat the Bears.

In game two, Panola would score first again with a homer, in the first inning.  They would tact on three more in the second and five more runs in the third to take a commanding 9 to 0 lead, after 3 innings of play. The Bears would get on the board, in the fourth inning, when Donavon Murray would single and eventually score on a Bo Barrilleaux pop fly. In the fifth inning, Baton Rouge would tact on a run via a solo homerun by freshman catcher Thomas Garber.  That would be the only two runs the Bears would score, as they would drop game two by the final score of 12-2, in seven innings. 

Tyler Davis earned the victory for Panola pitching four innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out six. Joseph Battaglia III got the loss for the Bears.  Joe pitched two innings, allowing four runs on four hits.

Panola out hit Baton Rouge 8 to 4.  Each team committed one error.

Bears Highlights Game 2: 

Donavon Murray went 1-3 with 1 run

Thomas Garber went 2-3 with 1 Run and 1 RBI (He had a homer and a double)

 

In game three, Baton Rouge took a 6 to 5 lead, in the top of the seventh, but Panola would roar back to score 10 runs over the next two innings to defeat the Bears by the final score of 15-6.  Panola would get on the board first with 3 runs, in the bottom of the second, to take an early 3-0 lead.  The Ponies would add another run, in the third inning.  The Bears would score two runs in the fourth inning, but still trailed 4-2. Samuel Jarrell would lead off with a double to left field and would later score on a single by Kolby Blanchard. Bo Barrilleaux, who reached base by being hit by a pitch, would score on a single to right field by Donavon Murray. Panola would answer back with a run, in the bottom of the fourth, to take a 5-3 lead. Baton Rouge would score a run in the fifth when William Veillon, who walked, would score on a wild pitch. The Bears would tie the game at 5, then take a one run lead, in the seventh. They would tie the game when Kolby Blanchard would reach on an error scoring two bears. The Bears would take a 6-5 lead when Panola would walk in a run with the bases loaded. Panola would answer quickly, in the seventh, with a homer to tie the game at 6. The Ponies would explode for nine runs in the eighth to take the 15 to 6 victory over Baton Rouge.

 

Baton Rouge was again outhit by Panola 16-6. Baton Rouge committed six errors.

Garret Hermes earned the victory for Panola. He pitched two innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out three. Tanner Young started the game for the Bears.  He pitched three innings allowing four runs on five hits. Salvador Lusco, Jacob Jenson and Jordy Adams pitched in relief for the Bears.

Panola improves to 3-0 while Baton Rouge falls to 0-3.

 

 

Bears Highlights Game 3:

Donavon Murray went 2-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI

William Veillon went 1-3 with 2 runs and 2 BB

Samuel Jarrell went 2-4 with 2 runs and 1RBI

 

The Bears will return home to Pete Goldsby Field on Friday February 1 at 6 pm to face Wharton County Junior College.
