Lady Bears win a thriller in double overtime over the LSUE Lady Bengals

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears and the LSUE Lady Bengals would meet tonight in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center in an LCCAC matchup. With a Lady Bears victory, they would be tied for the LCCAC lead with four games to play. Fourty minutes would not be enough for these two teams to settles the score. The Lady Bears and Lady Bengals would be involved in a dramatic double overtime thriller, in the Bears Den. The Lady Bears would pull away, in the second overtime, to earn the 86-76 victory.

The first three minutes of the first quarter was a back and forth battle between the Lady Bears and the Lady Bengals. The game would be tied three times. After the game was tied at 6 with 7:07 remaining, the Lady Bears would go on a 11 to 5 run to take a six point advantage with 4 minutes remaining. The run was fueld by a dominating rebounding performance on the defensive end limiting the Lady Bengals to single possession. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears led the Lady Bengals 23 to 18.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bengals would outscore the Lady Bears 18 to 9 to take a 36 to 32 lead into halftime.

The Lady Bears would come out of the locker room with a bit of fight, in the third quarter. The Lady Bears would go on a 6 to 4 run to pull within two points; 40-38 with 5:52 remaining. At the end of the third quarter, the LSUE Lady Bengals held a slim 49 to 47 lead over the Lady Bears.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears would tie the game at 51 with a corner jumper by Carlasia Moore with 7:26 left to play. The game would be tied two more times before the final minute of play. During that time span no team had a bigger than 2 point lead. LSUE Lady Bengals would get fouled on an inbound play with 1 minutes left. The Lady Bengals would make two free throws to take the 64 to 62 lead over the Lady Bears. Keaira Gross would drive the lane and hit a layup to tie the game at 64 with 52.9 remaining.  Both teams would have their chances at the end of regulation to win the ballgame but we would head into overtime tied at 64.

The first overtime period would go back and forth between the Lady Bengals and the Lady Bears. The overtime session would see three ties and four lead changes. The Lady Bengals would take a two point lead when they would make two free throws with 7.9 seconds to play. Akiyah Carnes would hit a jumper at the rim to tie the game at 74 as the clock would hit zero forcing a second overtime period.

In the second overtime period, the game would be tied at 76 with 4:28 to play. J'nyria Kelly would make two free throws after she was fouled on a rebound put back attempt. That would give the Lady Bears a 78 to 76 lead in which they would not relinquish. The Lady Bears would defeat the Lady Bengals 86 to 76 to earn a share of the conference lead.

J'nyria Kelly led the Lady Bears with 25 points and a career high 28 rebounds. The Lady Bears had four student athletes score in double figures. Kaylan Jack led the Lady Bengals with 30 points. The Lady Bengals had three students athlete score in double figures. 

 

Lady Bears Highlights

J'nyria Kelly led the Lady Bears with 25 points and 28 rebounds .

Carlasia Moore added 13 points with 3 assists.

Akiyah Carnes scored 11 points with 10 rebounds.

Haley Lavergne added 10 points with 6 rebounds.

 

With the victory Baton Rouge improved to 4-14, 3-2, while LSUE fell to 4-21, 3-2 on the season.  LSUE holds the overall series record with 23 wins and 19 losses over Baton Rouge.

The Lady Bears will travel to Shreveport this Saturday February 17, 2024 to take on the Southern Shreveport Lady Jags at 2 pm at Green Oaks High School.
