Lady Bears pick up first conference win over Southern Shreveport

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears took on the Southern University Shreveport Lady Jags, this afternoon, in the Bears Den. The Lady Bears would defeat the Lady Jags 66 to 50 to pick up their first LCCAC victory.

This afternoon the game started off a bit odd. The Southern Shreveport Lady Jags were late arriving to the gym for the game, in which, they were imposed a technical foul. Carlasia Moore would hit one of two frees to start the game off. The Lady Jags basically got off the bus, changed and was thrown into the game.

Despite the odd start, the Lady Jags would jump out to an early 7 to 3 lead over the Lady Bears with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter.  The Lady Bears would claw back and go on an 11-4 run to tie the game at 11 with 6:15 remaining. The game would be tied two more times during the next 4 minutes of play. After the game was tied at 15, the Lady Bears would close out the quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 24 to 16 lead after the first quarter. The run was fueled by Aniya Flowers, J'ynria Kelly and Keaira Gross.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bears increased their defensive pressure and improved on their offensive execution. The Lady Bears limited the Lady Jags to one possession on the offensive end. The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Jags 12 to 7, in the second quarter, to take a 36 to 23 advantage into the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bears continued their defensive pressure and their dominance on the boards limiting the Lady Jags on the offensive end. The Lady Bears grew their lead to 23 (largest of the game) with 4:14 to go in the third quarter; 48-25. The Lady Bears would outscore the Lady Jags in the third quarter, 18 to 8 to take a 54 to 31 advantage.

The Lady Jags would make it interesting, in the fourth quarter, as they would outscore the Lady Bears 19 to 12. The Lady Jags would get as close as thirteen points, 63-50 but the Lady Bears would defeat the Lady Jags 66 to 50 to pick up their first conference victory.

J'nyria Kelly led the Lady Bears with 16 points. The Lady Bears had three student athletes score in double figures, J'nyria Kelly Olivia Davis and Akiyah Carnes. Nakaii Webb led the Lady Jags with 14 points. The Lady Jags also had three student athletes score in double figures.

With the victory the Lady Bears improved to 2-14, 1-1, while the Lady Jags fell 3-8, 0-2 on the season. Baton Rouge still holds the overall series record with 43 wins and 4 losses over Southern Shreveport.

Lady Bears Highlights

J'nyria Kelly led the Lady Bears with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Olivia Davis scored 11 points with 7 rebounds.

Akiyah Carnes added 10 points with 15 rebounds.

The Lady Bears will travel to Eunice, Louisiana on Wednesday February 7, 2024, to take on the LSUE Lady Bengals at 5:30 pm in the HPE Center.
