Lady Bears struggle to contain the high powered offense of Bishop State

This afternoon was the twelfth meeting on the hardwood between the Baton Rouge Lady Bears and the Bishop State Lady Wildcats.  The Lady Bears struggled to contain the high-powered offense of the Lady Wildcats as they would be defeated 84 to 44, in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center.

In the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats opened in a full court press which got the Lady Bears out of sync on the offensive end of the floor. The Lady Wildcat would start the game on a 9-0 run to take the early advantage. The Lady Bears would get on the board with 5:24 remaining, in the quarter, with a pair of free throws from J'ynria Kelly.  The Lady Bears would go on a 8-0 run over the next four minutes to pull within 2; 12-10. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Wildcats had a slim 14 to 10 lead over the Lady Bears.

In the second quarter, the Lady Wildcats would get their inside out game working as they would outscore the Lady Bears 35 to 15, in the quarter,  to take a 48 to 25 lead into halftime. The Lady Wildcats would hit 5 three pointers in the quarter. The Lady Bears struggled on the offensive end. The one bright spot, in the quarter, was freshman guard Akiyah Carnes who scored 8 of the Lady Bears 15 second quarter points.

The Lady Bears offensive woes continued, in the third and fourth quarters, as Bishop State would out score the Lady Bears 36 to 19 to take the 84 to 44 victory this afternoon in the Bears Den. In the third and fourth quarters, the Lady Wildcats continued their aggressive inside play and stayed hot from behind the arc hitting four more three pointers.  In total the Lady Wildcats made 12 three pointers.

With the loss the Lady Bears fell to 1-13, while the Lady Wildcats improved to 11-6 on the season. The Lady Wildcats hold the overall series record with 7 wins and 5 losses against the Lady Bears.

Baton Rouge was led in scoring by Akiyah Carnes with 18 points. Bishop State was led in scoring by Jamirica Roberson with 21 points. The Lady Wildcats had 4 student athletes score in double figures.

 

Lady Bear Highlights:

Akiyah Carnes led the Lady Bears with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Keaira Gross added 6 points.

Zoriahn Davis scored 5 points with 2 rebounds.

 

The Lady Bears were supposed to play Coastal Alabama South this Saturday January 20, 2024, at home but that game was forfeited by Coastal South.  The Lady Bears will return to action on Saturday January 27, 2024, as they travel to Bay Minette to take on Coastal Alabama South.
