Lady Bears late comeback falls short in Wesson

Baton Rouge Lady Bears opened the 2024 portion of their schedule on the road in Wesson, Mississippi against the Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves, this evening in the Mullen Gymnasium. This was the Lady Bears' first game back from the holiday break.  The Lady Bears would forge a late fourth quarter comeback, but it was not enough as the Lady Wolves would defeat the Lady Bears 60 to 55.

In the first quarter, both teams would trade buckets and the lead, in the opening four minutes. In those four minutes the game saw three ties and four lead changes. After the game was tied at 6, the Lady Bears would go on a mini 5-0 run to take an 11-6 advantage with 3:53 remaining in the quarter. Col-Lin would turn up their defensive pressure a bit forcing the Lady Bears into a few bad offensive possessions. The Lady Wolves would go on a 12-2 run to close out the quarter to take an 18 to 13 lead.

In the second quarter, the Lady Wolves would continue their hot streak on the offensive end as they would go on a 6-2 run to grow their lead to 24-15 with 7:37 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Bears would not quit as they would pull within two points with 1 minutes remaining, 28-26. The Lady Bears' run was fueled by buckets from Olivia Davis, J'nyria Kelly, and Carlasia Moore.  The Lady Bears would inch closer 30 to 29 with 1.5 seconds left before Col-Lin would hit a midcourt buzzer beater to extend their lead to 33 to 29, at the half.

The Lady Bears third quarter woes came back again as they would be outscored 17 to 12. Co-Lin would take a 50 to 41 advantage into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears would show some life as they would open the quarter on a mini 7-6 run to pull within 8, 56-48 with 7:43 remaining.  The Lady Bears would continue to chip away at the Lady Wolves lead as they would only be down 59 to 55 after J'ynria Kelly would rebound a Haley Lavergne free throw miss and sink the put back and get fouled on the play.  That would be as close as the  Lady Bears would get as Co-Lin would make one of two free throws, in the final seconds, to secure the 60 to 55 victory.

 

J'nyria Kelly led all Lady Bears with 20 points. The Lady Bears had two student athlete score in double figures. Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves were led in scoring by Ceara Myers with 13 points. The Lady Wolves had 3 student athletes score in double figures.

 

With the loss the Lady Bear fall to 1-11, while the Lady Wolves improve to 7-3 on the season. This was the twentieth meeting between the two teams. Co-Lin leads the overall series with 17 wins and 3 losses over Baton Rouge.

Lady Bear Highlights:

J'nyria Kelly lead all Lady Bears with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Olivia Davis added 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Carlasia Moore scored 6 points with 1 rebound and 6 assists.

 

The Lady Bears will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas this Saturday January 13, 2024, to take on Shorter College at 2 pm.
