The freshman laden Baton Rouge Lady Bears squad put all phases of the game together this afternoon, in the Bears Den to pick up their first win of the season. The Lady Bears defeated the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes by the final score of 69 to 58.
The Baton Rouge Lady Bears found a spark on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor, in the first quarter, of this afternoon's game. The Lady Bears would come out the gates hot as they would outscore the Coyotes 7-1, in the opening three minutes of the game. The Lady Bears followed the game plan as they were aggressive on the defensive end limiting the Coyotes to one shot per possession. That aggressive defensive helped the Lady Bear settle into a rhythm on the offensive end. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Bears held a 21 to 9 lead. The Lady Bears first quarter offensive explosion was fueled by 11 points from freshman guard Olivia Davis from Natchez, Mississippi.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bears got a bit sloppy with the ball which turned into transition buckets for the Coyotes. The Coyotes would find a bit of a rhythm, in the second quarter, on the offensive end as they would outscore the Lady Bears 18-16. The Lady Bears would go into the halftime break with a 37 to 27 lead.
The Lady Bears kept up their defensive pressure, in the third quarter, as they would outscore the Coyotes 14-2 to build their largest lead of the ball game twenty-two points; 51-29 with 2:59 remaining in the third quarter. The Lady Bears would outscore the Coyotes 21 to 15 in the third quarter to take a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter;58-42.
The Coyotes would not go away as they would fight back and pull within eight points; 63-55 with 2 minutes left in the game. The Lady Bears would seal the victory from the free throw line. The Coyotes would outscore the Lady Bears 16 to 11, in the fourth quarter. The Lady Bears would defeat the Coyotes 69 to 58.
The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Olivia Davis with 19 points. The Coyotes were led in scoring by Taylah Murph who had 17 points.
Baton Rouge Lady Bears improve to 1-7, while the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes fall to 5-7 on the season. Baton Rouge reclaims the overall series record 3-2.
Lady Bears Highlights:
Olivia Davis led all the Lady Bears with 19 points.
J'nyria Kelly added 17 points.
Carlasia Moore chipped in 9 points.
The Lady Bears will take some time off for semester finals. They will return to action on Thursday December 7, 2023, as they will welcome the East Central Lady Warriors to the Bears Den at 5:30 pm.
