Lady Bears fall to Col-Lin Lady Wolves in Bears Den

Tuesday November 27, 2023: Women's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

A young team and poor end of quarter time management haunts the Baton Rouge Lady Bears, this evening in the Bears Den, as the Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves capture the 73 to 60 victory.

The first quarter of tonight's game was an even contest between the two ball clubs.  The game saw three ties and 6 lead changes, in the quarter. Olivia Davis hit a jumper with 1:39 left in the quarter to tie the game at 11. The Lady Wolves would hit a corner three to take the 14-11 lead with 34.4 seconds. The Lady Bears would take a quick shot and foul the Lady Wolves with 10 seconds left, to help extend the Lady Wolves lead to 5 points, at the end of the first quarter; 16-11.

In the second quarter, the Lady Wolves would use that end of the first quarter momentum to extend their lead to 10 points; 30-20 with 3:15 remaining. The Lady Bears would continue to claw back as they would close the quarter on an 8-2 run fueled by Akiyah Carnes (4 points) and J'nyria Kelly (4 points). The Lady Wolves would take a 32-28 lead into the half.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bears would continue their fight as they would pull within two 40-38 with 4 minutes remaining on an Olivia Davis jumper. Carlasia Moore hit a short jumper to tie the game at 42 with 1:34, left in the quarter.  The game would be tied again at 44, with 41.9 seconds remaining in the quarter, with an Akiyah Carnes jumper. Then again the lack of end quarter time management haunted the Lady Bears.  The Lady Wolves would hit a wing three pointer and force a Lady Bear turnover which led to a layup to give them a five-point lead at the end of the third quarter: 49-44.

Like the second quarter, The Lady Wolves would use that late quarter momentum to fuel their fourth quarter run. The Lady Wolves would go on an 11 to 4 run to open the quarter and extend their lead to 12 over the Lady Bears.  The Lady Bears could not find an answer on the defensive end to stop the Lady Wolves' momentum thus they fell tonight 73-60.

The Lady Bears were led in scoring by J'nyria Kelly with 13 points. The Lady Wolves were led in scoring by A'shante Fleming with a game high of 19 points.

The Lady Bears fall to 0-7, while the Lady Wolves improve to 5-2 on the season.
