Baton Rouge Lady Bears open the 2019-20 season with a hard fought loss to region 23 opponent the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs 64 to 55.

It was a back and forth first quarter as each team came out a bit timid and had some turnover issues.  The Lady Bears scored a late three pointer by Crystal Smith, to end the first quarter with a 14 to 13 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs got hot, in the second quarter, from beyond the arc to take a 33 to 21 lead into the half. The Lady Bulldogs connected on four three pointer in the quarter. The young Lady Bears team figured some things out both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, in the second half.  The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Bulldogs 21 to 15, in the third quarter, behind strong play from two freshman forwards, Ivy Carr and Amani Barrow. At the end of the third quarter, Mississippi Gulf Coast held a slim six-point lead; 48 to 42.  Baton Rouge had their chances to cut into Gulf Coast's lead, in the fourth quarter, but defensive miscues did them in.  The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Lady Bears 16 to 13, in the fourth quarter, to take the 64 to 55 region 23 victory tonight, in the Lady Bear Classic.
