BRCC Lady Bears fall in double overtime

It took two overtime periods for the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears to defeat the BRCC Lady Bears this afternoon, in a region 23 contest, by the final score of 78 to 75.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair as the score was tied three times and had three different lead changes.  It was also the Kayla Watson show for BRCC, in the first quarter, as she scored 12 of the Lady Bears 22 points. With the score tied at 14, Baton Rouge went on an 8 to 3 run to take a 22 to 17 advantage, at the end of the first quarter.

Turnovers and missed rebounds was the story for both teams, in the second quarter. Southwest Mississippi outscored the Lady Bears 11 to 9, in the second quarter, but still trailed 31 to 28 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Bears from Mississippi came out on fire outscoring Baton Rouge Lady Bears by the score of 19 to 12 to take a 47 to 43 lead heading, into the fourth quarter. BRCC would inch closer and closer, in the fourth, but it was not till the last seconds when Kayla Watson stole the ball and dribbled Coast to Coast for a layup to tie the game at 59 and send it to overtime. 

In the first overtime, Baton Rouge jumped out early with a lay-up by Kayla Watson to take the two point lead. BRCC held the lead at 69 to 66 with 31 seconds left to go when Southwest's Jamaya Galloway made a bucket and got fouled for a three point play to tie the game at 69.  Both teams missed opportunities to win the game at the end of the first overtime period.

Southwest Lady Bears owed the second overtime period. They took an early two point advantage that the BRCC Lady Bears could not overcome. Baton Rouge had their chances to tie the game but missed free throws would do the Lady Bears in. Final score was Southwest Mississippi 78 and Baton Rouge 75.

Baton Rouge was led by Kayla Watson with 32 points, while Southwest was led by Ty Lee with 18 points. Both schools had 4 players in double figures.

 Southwest Mississippi improves to 5-4 while Baton Rouge falls to 6-9.

 

Lady Bears Highlights:

Kayla Watson scored 32 points with 6 steals and 3 rebounds 

Desrael Schnyder added 12 points and 9 rebounds 

Bailey Antoine and Tronayia Issac each had 10 points.

 

The Lady Bears will be back in action this Tuesday January 8, as they travel to take on Itawamba. Game time is set for 2 pm in Fulton, MS.
