Lady Bears roll past Lady Trojans

January 3, 2019: Women's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

It may have taken a couple more days but the Lady Bears were finally able to kick off the holiday rust.  The ladies were dynamic in all phases of the game as they roll pass the Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans, by the final score of 80 to 66, this afternoon in the Bonne Santé Wellness Center.

The game was close early as the score was tied twice, in the first five minutes. After the game was tied at 10, the Lady Bears went on a 13 to 0 run to close out the quarter and take a 23 to 10 lead after one. BRCC came out a bit slow, in the second quarter, as the Lady Trojans went on a 7 to 2 run to close the gap to eight but that would be as close as they would get in the first half.  The Lady Bears increased their defensive pressure which turned into steals and transitions buckets.  Leading the charge on defensive was sophomore guard Kayla Watson who had five steals on the day.  The rest of the Lady Bears feed off of Kayla's energy and defensive pressure, as the team accounted for 22 steals, on the afternoon.  At the half, Baton Rouge led Mississippi Delta by the score of 45 to 27.

In the second half, the Lady Bears kept their foot on the gas pedal, extending their lead to 24 points midway through the third quarter. At the end of the third, the Lady Bears led 61 to 38.  Mississippi Delta fought till the end outscoring Baton Rouge 28 to 19, in the fourth quarter but it was not enough to overcome BRCC's lead.  The final score was Baton Rouge 80 and Mississippi Delta 66.

The Lady Bears were led in scoring by Kayla Watson with 22 points, while Shelvin Raelen paced the Lady Trojans with 17 points.

Baton Rouge improves to a record of 5-8 while Mississippi Delta falls to 2-7.
