Friday November 16, 2018: Women's Basketball

Baton Rouge, LA

BRCC Lady Bears earned a hard fought victory tonight against region 23 opponent Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs.  Final score was BRCC 63 and Holmes 59. For the sixth straight game, the Lady Bears came out timid and sluggish, in the first quarter.  After one quarter, Holmes led 21 to 7.  In the second quarter, the Lady Bears began to settle down and let the game come to them.  They turned up the defensive pressure and forced Holmes into some turnovers, which led to some buckets for the lady bears.   BRCC outscored Holmes 17 to 16 but still trailed at halftime 37 to 24.

At halftime, the Lady Bears had a team meeting and went over some things they needed to fix and areas they could improve. It sure worked as the Lady Bears came out on fire and out scored the Lady Bulldogs 15 to 6, in the third quarter.  BRCC turned up the pressure and Kayla Watson had a whale of a third quarter with 8 of her 19 points coming in the frame.  She lead the Lady Bears defensive pressure that got Holmes out of sync on both ends of the floor.  That same pressure continued in the fourth quarter. Holmes did make it close down the stretch with some pressure of their own that forced some Lady Bears turnovers, which turned into some buckets for the Lady Bulldogs. The game was tied three times, in the fourth quarter. Holmes actually took a 3 point lead at 53 to 50 with 4:34 remaining.  The Bulldogs would take a 6 point lead with 4:17 to play before Harlee Doucet  would hit a three pointer, from the corner, to bring the Lady Bears within one, at 55 to 56.  The Lady Bears would take the lead for good on two made free throws by Sydney Martin;60 to 58. It was a game of free throws from then on, as the Lady Bears would make 3 out of 4 to seal the 63 to 59 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Holmes was led by Jekalen Jones and Janae Collier who each scored 16 points.  BRCC was led by Kayla Watson with 20 points.  The Lady Bears shot 81 % from the free throw line compared to 67% by the Lady Bulldogs.
