Lady Bears Split Season Openers

The Lady Bears opened the season with not one, but two games, on Saturday afternoon. In the first game Baton Rouge faced Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and fell 65-60. 

Lanae Bickham led the team in scoring with 15 points, including 9 of 9 from the free throw line. Terriel Ross was the only other Lady Bear in double figures with 12 points. Returning sophomores, Octavia Lawdins and Anitara Whitfield both added eight points in the loss. Overall, eleven of the Lady Bears scored.

There was no time to hang their heads. Baton Rouge took a small break before playing Southwest Tennessee Community College for the second game of their season opening doubleheader. The Lady Bears bounced back to beat the Salukis 66-55, bringing their season record to 1-1.

Bickham led the team in scoring for the second time with 14 points, followed by Whitfield with 13. Lawdins added nine points in the victory, while Ross and Amari Banks each tallied seven points.

Baton Rouge hits the road tomorrow afternoon for the Northeast Mississippi Classic. The Lady Bears will face Northwest Mississippi Community College on Monday afternoon; followed by a game versus the tournament host, Northeast Mississippi, on Tuesday evening.
