Bears drop a pair of games to #11 LSUE Lady Bengals

The Baton Rouge Bears and the # 11 LSUE Lady Bengals met on the diamond for the 55th and 56th time this afternoon at Hartley Vey Sports Complex (Oak Villa). The Bears late game rally fell short as the Lady Bengals would defeat the Bears 5-4, in eight innings. In game two, the Bears could not overcome the Lady Bengals comeback as they fell 8-3, in game two.

 

Game One

Game one was a battle that regulation could not hold between the Bears and the Bengals.  With their backs against the wall, the Bears would rally for two runs, in the bottom of the seventh inning, to tie the game at four but the Bengals would scratch across a run, in the top of the eighth inning, to grab the 5-4 victory.

The Lady Bengals would scratch first with a run, in the top of the first inning. LSUE would tact on another run, in the top of the second, to take a 2-0 lead over the Bears.

The Bears would get on the board, in the bottom of the third inning, when they would take advantage of some sloppy defensive plays by the Lady Bengals. Kennedy Kelly would reach on an error by the Bengal's second basemen, advance to second on a sac bunt by Hannah Abshire and score when Aubrie Shaw would reach on an error by the Bengal's first basemen.  After three innings, the Lady Bengals held a 2-1 lead over the Bears.

The Lady Bengals would plate two runs, in the top of the fifth inning, to extend their lead over the Bears to 4-1.

Baton Rouge would scratch across a one run, in the bottom of the sixth, but they still trailed the Lady Bengals 4-2. Molly Sistrunk would lead off the inning with a single to right field. Eve Fruge' would hit into a fielders choice. Keesley Ross would pinch hit and reach by being hit by a pitch. Mary Wicke would pinch hit and reach on an error. Eve Fruge would score on the same error.

The Bears rallied, in the bottom of the seventh inning, to score two runs to tie the ballgame at four a piece. Kennedy Kelly would reach on an infield single then Hannah Abshire would single down the left field line. Both runners would move up sixty feet on a sacrifice bunt by Aubrie Shaw. Kylee Dulyea would hit a shot to the Bengals shortstop which she would beat out the throw at first. On the play the Bears would plate two runs to tie the game at four.

At the end of regulation the Bears and the Bengals would be tied at four runs a piece.

The Lady Bengals would scratch across a run, in top of the eighth inning, to take a 5-4 lead over the Bears. The Bears would go down in order, in the bottom of the eighth, thus falling to the Lady Bengals 5-4.

Macy Castleman started in the circle for the Bears and took the loss. Castleman pitched 8 innings allowing 5 runs on 12 hits while walking one and striking out one. R. Rios started in the circle for the Lady Bengals and earned the victory. She pitched 8 innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 7 hits while striking out 6.

LSUE outhit Baton Rouge 12 to 7. The Bengals committed three errors compared to one for the Bears on the ball game.

 

Bears Game One Highlights

Kylee Dulyea went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Kennedy Kelly went  for 3 with 2 runs.

Hannah Abshire went 1 for 2 with 1 run.

Molly Sistrunk went 1 for 4

Eve Fruge' went 1 for 3 with 1 run.

 

Game Two

The Bears would score early but they could not overcome a late rally by the Lady Bengals thus falling 8-3, in game two of today's doubleheader.

The Bears would scratch first with three runs in the third inning. Aubrie Shaw would single, Kennedy Kelly would reach via a fielder's choice and Hannah Abshire would hit a short fly ball to left field to load the bases full of Bears. Desi Robinson would hit a sac fly to left field to score Shaw for the Bears first run of the game. Lily Wainwright would single down the left field line scoring Kelly and Abshire. 

The Lady Bengals would push across a run, in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bears still held a 3-1 lead.

LSUE would plate three runs, in the top of the sixth inning, to take a 4-3 lead over the Bears. The Lady Bengals would add some insurance runs to their lead when they would plate 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead over the Bears to 8-3. Three of their four runs came off the bat of G. Huetter who hit a three run homer to left field.

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears. Maddie pitched 5.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Jennifer Fontenot (1.0 innings) and Olivia Burns (0.1 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. Jennifer Fontenot took the loss for the Bears.  M. Howell started in the circle for the Lady Bengals. She pitched  2.2 innings allowing 3 runs in 5 hits. C. Nettles pitched in relief for the Lady Bengals and was credited with the victory. Nettles pitched 4.1 innings allowing 0 runs on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1.

LSUE outhit Baton Rouge 12 to 8. The Bengals committed one error in the ball game.

Bears Game Two Highlights

Hannah Abshire went 1 for 4 with 1 run.

Desi Robinson went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Lily Wainwright went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Mary Wicke went 1 for 2.

Aubrie Shaw went 2 for 3 with 1 run.

Kennedy Kelly had 1 run.

Kylee Dulyea went 1 for 2 with 1 BB.

 

With the pair of losses, the Bears fell to 23-21 while the Lady Bengals improved to 36-12 on the season.

The Bears will travel to Monroeville, Alabama to face the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes on Tuesday April 23, 2024 in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
