Bears sweep the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes on record setting day.

The Baton Rouge Bears and the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes met this afternoon at Hartley Vey Sports Comolex to start their four game home and home series. The Bears would sweep the Coyotes 5-1 and 3-0.

Game One

The bottom of the Bears lineup (Sullivan, Kennedy and Fruge') combined for four of the teams eight hits, they drove in two runs and scored two runs to help lead the Bears to the 5-1 game one victory over the Coyotes.

The Bears would get on the board first with a run in the second inning. Lily Wainwright would lead off with a double to left field. Molly Sistrunk would ground out to the second basemen but would move Wainwright to third. Eve Fruge would be next and she would single to right field driving in Wainwright for the Bears first run of the game and the early 1-0 lead.

The Bears would add to their lead with a run in the third inning; 2-0. Aubrie Shaw would walk and score on a Kalea Dulyea single up the middle. 

The Coyotes would get on the board with a run, in the top of the fifth inning,  but they still trailed the Bears 2-1. The Bears would respond and plate a run in the bottom of the fifth inning  to increase their lead to 3-1.  Hannah Abshire would lead off the inning with a bunt single and she would score on a sacrifice fly by Kylee Dulyea.

The Bears would add two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning; 5-1. Kennedy Kelly would triple and score on a Laine Sullivan single up the middle. Hannah Abshire would single to the pitcher and reach first. Sullivan would advance to third on the Abshire single. Abshire would get caught in a run down long enough for Laine to steal home. 

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Robinson pitched 7 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits while walking 3 and striking out 9. With the victory Maddie Robinson becomes the Bears Single Season Leader in Career Wins with 10. K. Duke started in the circle for the Coyotes and took the loss. She pitched 6 innings allowing 5 runs on 8 hits while walking 3 and striking out 1.

Baton Rouge outhit Coastal Alabama North 8 to 5. Both teams committed one error in the ball game.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Hannah Abshire went 2 for 4 with 1 run. 2 steals. ( with the two steals she ties the BRCC Career a steals record)

Kylee Dulyea went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs.

Lily Wainwright went 1 for 3 with 1 run.

Eve Fruge' went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Kennedy Kelly went 2 for 3 with 1 run.

Laine Sullivan went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Game Two

Bears would get a combined solid pitching performance from Ashton Duhon and Jennifer Fontenot to secure the 3-0, game two victory over the Coyotes.

The Bears would scratch first with a run in the bottom of the third inning. Eve Fruge' would lead off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on sacrifice bunt by Kennedy Kelly and then she would tag and move to third on a Laine Sullivan pop fly to left field. Hannah Abshire would beat out an infield single to the shortstop and Fruge' would score on the play. 

The Coyotes would threaten,in the top of the fifth inning, but two outstanding plays by Bears Shortstop Kennedy Kelly would end the threat.

The Bears would add two runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth; 3-0. Molly Sistrunk would lead off with a single to left field and would score on a double by Kennedy Kelly to centerfield.  Kennedy Kelly would be heads up and steal third and score on a Laine Sullivan ground out for the second run of the frame for the Bears.

Ashton Duhon started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Duhon pitched 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 1 hits while walking 3. Jennifer Fontenot ( 3.1innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. M. Rose started in the circle for the Coyotes and took the loss. She pitched 6 innings allowing 3 runs on 6 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3.

Baton Rouge out hit Coastal Alabama North 6 to 5. The Bears committed one error in the ballgame .

 

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Hannah Abshire went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Ashlyn Hebert went 2 for 3.

Molly Sistrunk went 1 for 2 with 1 run.

Eve Fruge' went 1 for 1 with 1 run.

Kennedy Kelly went 1 for 1 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Laine Sullivan had 1 RBI.


With the pair of victories the Bears improved to 23-19 while the Coyotes fell to 6-34 on the season. With these victories the Bears tie the All Time Record for Program Wins with 23 from 2013.

 

Bears Softball will host the LSUE Lady Bengals on Wednesday April 17, 2024 at Hartley -Vey Sports Complex ( Oak Villa). The doubleheader will start at 1 pm.
