Bears sweep Millers at Tony Robichaux Sports Complex

The Baton Rouge Bears softball team traveled to the Rice Capital of the America, Crowley Louisiana to take on the John Melvin University Millers at Tony Robichaux Sports Complex. The Bears got some timely hitting and some solid pitching to sweep the John Melvin University Millers 7-1 and 6-2.

Game one

A big third inning propelled the Bears to the 7-1 game one victory over the Millers.

The Bears would get on the board first, in the top of the first, when Ashley Hebert would single, steal second, advance to third on pass ball and score on a Lily Wainwright single to left field. The Bears would add another run, in the second inning, when Meaux Carroll would reach on an error and score on a Kennedy Kelly triple down the right field line. 

Ashlyn Hebert would lead off the third inning with a solo homer to left field for the Bears first run of the inning. Lily Wainwright would then double to left field and Keesley Ross would draw a walk. Meaux Carroll would hit a hard line drive to the pitcher which would drive in Wainwright and Carroll would be safe at first to put runners on the corners for the Bears. Laine Sullivan would single to right field scoring Ross and the Bears third run of the frame. Kennedy Kelly would lay down a bunt and advance to second on an error. Aubrie Shaw would hit an infield single driving in Sullivan. Shaw would steal second and Kelly would score on the play for the Bears fifth run of the inning. The Bears would take advantage of some inconsistent defense by the Millers to plate five runs in the third inning to take an 7-0 lead.

The Millers would get on the board with a run, in the bottom of the fourth inning, but they still trailed the Bears 7-1.

Neither team could scratch across a run in the final three innings thus the Bears would win game one 7-1.

Ashton Duhon started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Duhon pitched 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 1 hits while walking 2 and striking out 5. Olivia Burns ( 0.2 innings), Jennifer Fontenot (3.1 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears. .

Baton Rouge outhit John Melvin 11 to 3. Both teams committed one error in the ballgame. 

Bears Game One Highlights:

Aubrie Shaw went 1 for 3 with 1 BB and 1 RBI.

Ashlyn Hebert went 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 1 RBI and 1 homer.

Lily Wainwright went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Keesley Ross had 2 BB and 1 run.

Meaux Carroll went 1 for 2 with 1 Run, 1 RBI and 2 BB.

Laine Sullivan went 1 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Kennedy Kelly went 3 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Game Two

A close game early but the Bears break it open with five runs combined in the fifth and sixth inning to defeat the John Melvin University Millers 6-1, in game two of today's doubleheader in Crowley.

Hannah Abshire would lead off, the first inning, with an infield single and she would advance to second when she would catch the Millers sleeping on defense. Ashlyn Hebert would ground out to the second basemen but Abshire would score on the play for the Bears first run of the ballgame. 

The Millers would threaten, in the second inning, but two great defensive plays by Bear's shortstop Kennedy Kelly would get the Bears out of the inning without any damage.

The Millers would tie the game at one via a solo homer to left field, in the bottom of the third inning.

The Bears would retake the lead with two runs, in the top of the fifth inning; 3-1. Laine Sullivan would triple to left field and score on a single by Hannah Abshire. Abshire would score when Ashlyn Hebert would lay down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error. The Millers would try to get the out at the plate but an errant throw scores Abshire.

The Millers would threaten, in the bottom of the fifth,  but Bears pitcher Macey Castleman would pitch herself out of the jam to keep the Bears with the 3-1 lead.

The Bears would load the bases with a single by Laine Sullivan followed by a double by Kennedy Kelly and a walk by Hannah Abshire, in the top of the sixth inning. Aubrie Shaw would then hit a shot to the Miller's shortstop which she would field then overthrow first which would clear the bases. The Bears would score three runs in the inning to increase their lead to 6-1 over the Millers.

Bailey Smith came in to pitch in relief for the Bears and she shut down the Millers in the last two innings to seal the 6-1 game two victory.

Macy Castleman started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Castleman pitched 5 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Bailey Smith would pitch in relief for the Bears. 

Baton Rouge outhit John Melvin 8 to 4. John Melvin committed three errors compared to one for Baton Rouge.

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Hannah Abshire went 2 for 3 with 3 runs, 1 RBI and 1 BB.

Aubrie Shaw went 2 for 3.

Ashlyn Hebert had 2 RBIs.

Lily Wainwright went 1 for 3

Laine Sullivan went 2 for 2 with 1 BB and 2 Runs.

Kennedy Kelly went 1 for 3 with 1 run,

 

With the sweep the Bears improved to 21-19 while the Millers fell to 14-22 on the season.

The Bears will host the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes tomorrow Thursday April 4, 2024 in a doubleheader starting at 1 pm at Hartley Vey Sports Complex ( Oak Villa).
