Bears sweep Central Alabama Trojans in Day 1 of Bulldog Classic

The Baton Rouge Bears Softball team started the Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs Classic this afternoon against the Central Alabama Community College. Due to the inclement weather in the Perkinston area the game was delayed to a 4 pm start.  The Bears would swept Central Alabama as they would win game one via a forfeit and game two 18-7 in five innings.

 

Game One

The first game between Baton Rouge and Central Alabama was very entertaining.  Baton Rouge would score five runs, in the bottom of the first inning, to take the early lead. Aubrie Shaw would each via a walk, then Molly Sistrunk would be hit by a pitch. Ashlyn Hebert would hit a double to centerfield scoring Shaw and Sistrunk for the Bears first runs of the game. Lily Wainwright would follow with a walk. Eve Fruge' would hit a three run homer over the left field fence. (this was Eve first collegiate home run) After one inning the Bears led 5-0.

It was in the second inning that the game got a bit wild. The Head Coach for Central Alabama started complaining balls and strikes to the umpire. The umpire, without giving him a warning, kicked him out of the ballgame. Central Alabama's Head Coach refused to leave the game in a timely manner thus the umpires called the game. The Bear were awarded the victory via forfeit.

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Jenna Castleberry started in the circle for Central Alabama was took the loss.

Bears Game One Highlights:

Eve Fruge went 1 for 1 with 1 run, 3RBIs, and 1 homer.

Ashlyn Hebert went 1 for 1 with 1 run and 2 RBIs.

Lily Wainwright, Aubrie Shaw and Molly Sistrunk each had 1 run.

 

Game Two

The Bears would have two big innings at the beginning of the game and the and of the game to preserve the 18 to 7 game two victory over Central Alabama.

The Bears would start the game off on fire ,as they would explode for seven runs, in the first inning to take a commanding 7-0 advantage. Desi Robinson and Aubrie Shaw would reach on back to back errors.Molly Sistrunk would follow with a triple to centerfield scoring Robinson and Shaw. Kylee Dulyea would lay down a sac bunt scoring Sistrunk from third. Ashlyn Hebert and Lily Wainwright would hit back to back singles. Eve Fruge' would walk to load the bases for the Bears. Hannah Abshire would ground out but Hebert would score from third for the Bears four run of the frame. Lily Wainwright would score on a pass ball. Kennedy Kelly would hit a bunt single scoring Fruge'.  The Bears would bat around in the inning as Desi Robinson would single to centerfield scoring Kelly.

The Bears bats would stay hot as they would score two more runs, in the bottom of the second inning. One of those runs came via a solo homer to left field by Molly Sistrunk.  The Bears led 8-0.

Central Alabama would find some success at the plate, in the fourth inning, as they would plate seven runs to pull with two runs ; 9-7. 

Baton Rouge would respond quickly with nine runs, in the top of the fifth, to take a commanding 18 to 7 lead over Central Alabama. Desi Robinson and Aubrie Shaw would lead off the inning with back to back singles. Robinson would steal second and score on the Shaw single to right field. Kylee Dulyea would hit a two run homer to left field to extend the Bears lead to 12 to 7. Mary Wicke would reach on a walk and score on a triple to right field by Lily Wainwright. Essynce Wallace would reach via the walk. Meaux Carrol would hit a sac bunt scoring Wainwright from third. Kennedy Kelly would reach on an error but Wallace would score on the play. Kelly would score on a Aubrie Shaw single to left field. Kylee Dulyea would hit a single to left field scoring Desi Robinson, who reached via walk and advanced to third on a Molly Sistrunk single to left field. The Bears would score nine runs off seven hits in the inning.

Jennifer Fontenot would get a pop fly and two strikeouts, in the bottom of the fifth inning, to seal the Bears 18 to 7 five inning run rule victory.

 

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears and earned the victory. Robinson pitched 3 innings allowing 5 runs (4 earned) off 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Jennifer Fontenot pitched two innings in relief for the Bears. Jenna Castleberry pitched 3 innings for Central Alabama and was credited with the loss.

 

Baton Rouge outhit the Bears 16 to 6. Central Alabama committed five errors compared to two errors for the Bears.

 

Bears Game Two Highlights:

Desi Robinson went 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI.

Aubrie Shaw went 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs.

Molly Sistrunk went 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 3 RBIs and 1 homer.

Kylee Dulyea went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 5 RBIs.

Lily Wainwright went 2 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

Eve Fruge went 1 for 2 with 1 run and 1 RBI.

Kennedy Kelly went 1 for 4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI.

 

With the sweep, the Bears improved to 11-13 on the season, while Central Alabama fell to 10-10.

 

The Bears will conclude the Bulldogs Classic tomorrow Saturday March 2 with a doubleheader starting at 10 am against the Bishop State Lady wildcats at Rene Smith Field.
