Youngsville, LA: Softball

Baton Rouge Bears finished off day one of the Mardi Gras Invitational with a match up against the #6 Pearl River Wildcats. It was a pitchers' duel with a single run deciding the ball game. The Lady Wildcats would defeat the Bears 1-0.

The Lady Wildcats would score their only run of the ballgame, in the third inning, when M. Lavergne would homer to left field off Bear's pitcher Maddie Robinson. This would be the only run Robinson would give up in the 4.2 innings of work she pitched.

The Bears struggled at the plate to get that timely hit. Lady Wildcats pitcher L. Bailey kept the Bears off balance at the plate, striking out nine. The bright spot for the Bears was a leadoff double in the second inning by Kylee Dulyea to right field.  Eve Fruge' would single up the middle, in the third inning, but would be left stranded. Molly Sistrunk would hit an infield single, in the fourth inning, but would also get stranded. Kylee Dulyea would lead off the seventh inning with a single up the middle but again would be stranded.

Maddie Robinson started in the circle for the Bears. Robinson pitched 4.2 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Robinson earned the loss.  Jennifer Fontenot pitched in relief for the Bears. L. Bailey started in the circle for the Lady Wildcats, and she earned the victory. L. Bailey pitched seven innings allowing 0 runs on 4 hits while striking out 9.

Baton Rouge outhit Pearl River 4 to 2. Baton Rouge committed one error in the ballgame.

Bears Highlights

Kylee Dulyea went 2 for 3.

Molly Sistrunk went 1 for 2.

Eve Fruge' went 1 for 2.

With the loss the Bears drop to 3-3 while the Lady Wildcats improved to 4-0 on the season. Pearl River leads the overall series with 14 wins and 3 losses over Baton Rouge.

Baton Rouge will return to action on Saturday February 3, 2024, for the second day of the Mardi Gras Invitational. They are scheduled to play Southwest Mississippi Community College at 9 am and National Park at 11:30 am at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Weather may play a factor in Saturday's games.
