Lady Bears rebound after tough game one loss to earn a split with the Sun Chiefs

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears and the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs met this afternoon, in the Capital City, to conclude their season series. The Lady Bears and Sun Chiefs split their first meeting back in February in Bay Minette. Similar to their first meeting of the season, the Sun Chiefs would win game one 9-4 and the Lady Bears would rebound to win game two 11-5.

Game one
The Baton Rouge Lady Bears watched an early lead disappear, with a seventh inning comeback by the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs. The Sun Chiefs win game one 9-4 over the Lady Bears.

The Lady Bears would get on the board first when they would take advantage of a throwing error by the Sun Chiefs. Alara Taylor would walk, steal second, advance to third on infield hit by Jennifer Ipson and score on a throwing error by the Sun Chiefs. In the third inning, the Sun Chiefs would load the bases but an outstanding defensive double play by the Lady Bears would get them out of the inning. The Sun Chiefs would threaten again, in the fourth inning, but the Lady Bears defense would hold the Sun Chiefs scoreless. The Lady Bears would add to their lead, in the fourth inning, with a run. Alara Taylor would lead off with a triple to right field and score on a Ryen Lawrence single up the middle. After four innings, the Lady Bears held a 2-0 lead over the Sun Chiefs. The Lady Bears would scratch across two runs, in the fifth inning, to extend their lead to 4-0. Morgan Alleman would hit a bloop single to right field driving in a run. Jennifer Ipson would single up the middle scoring Alleman for the second Lady Bears run of the inning. After five innings, the Lady Bears led 4-0. Sun Chiefs load the bases in the sixth inning but Marley Olivier would pitch herself out the inning with a pop fly and two strikeouts to hold the Sun Chiefs scoreless. The Sun Chiefs would score nine runs, in the seventh inning, to take a 9 to 4 lead over the Lady Bears. The Lady Bears could not score any runs, in the seventh inning, thus falling to the Sun Chiefs;9-4.

Taylor Heaton earned the victory for the Sun Chiefs. She pitched seven innings allowing 4 runs on 5 hits while striking out 6. Marley Olivier took the loss for the Lady Bears. Marley pitched six and two-thirds innings allowing 8 runs on 9 hits while striking out 7. Sophia Tanner pitched in relief for the Lady Bears.

Coastal Alabama South out hit Baton Rouge 10 to 5. Both teams committed one error in the ball game.

Game One Lady Bears Highlights 

Morgan Alleman went 2 for 4 with 1 run and 1 RBI

Alara Taylor went 1 for 2 with 2 runs 

Jennifer Ipson went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI

Ryen Lawrence went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI

Game Two

Two big innings by the Lady Bears, a solid pitching performance and solid defense leads the Lady Bears to a 11-5 game two victory over the Sun Chiefs.

The Lady Bears would get on the board first with five runs, in the second inning, to take an early 5-0 lead. Adelyn Fisher would lead off the inning with a walk, she would steal second and steal third and score on a pass ball for the Lady Bears first run of the ball game. The Lady Bears would then load the bases when Isabella Landeche would walk, Cierra Treigle would single up the middle and Kristyn Lormand would be hit by a pitch. Morgan Alleman would follow with a single to left field scoring Landeche. Alara Taylor would hit a double to left field scoring Treigle and Lormand. Jennifer Ipson would lay down a beautiful sac bunt scoring Alleman from third and the Lady Bears fifth run of the inning. The Sun Chiefs would get on the board, in the fourth inning, via a three-run home run by M. Eiland to left field. After four innings, the Lady Bears led 5-3. The Lady Bears would erupt, in the fifth inning, for five more runs to take a 10-3 lead over the Sun Chiefs. All the Lady Bears runs in the fifth inning came with two outs. Emma McCormick would walk, steal second and score on an Isabella Landeche single up the middle. Kylie Lormand would pinch run for Landeche and she would steal third and score on a Kristyn Lormand infield single. Morgan Alleman would follow with a lazy fly ball to centerfield that would score two runs. Alara Taylor would hit a hard-line drive infield single to third scoring Alleman for the Lady Bears fifth run of the inning. Coastal Alabama South would not quit as they would score two runs, in the sixth inning, but they still trailed 10-5. The Lady Bears would add an insurance run, in the bottom of the sixth inning, to take a 11-5 lead into the seventh. The Sun Chiefs would threaten again, in the seventh inning, but a game ending double play by the Lady Bears would end the threat and preserve the 11-5 victory.

Kelsie B Etheridge earned the victory for the Lady Bears. KB pitched seven innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out 2. Ashlynn Jenkins took the loss for the Sun Chiefs. She pitched one and one-third innings allowing 4 runs on 2 hits.

 

Game Two Lady Bears Highlights:

Kristyn Lormand went 1 for 3 with 2 runs and 1 RBI

Morgan Alleman went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs 

Alara Taylor went 3 for 3 with 1 BB and 3 RBIs 

Jennifer Ipson had 1 RBI 

Ryen Lawrence went 1 for 4 with 1 run

Emma McCormick had 1 run and 1 RBI 

Isabella Landeche went 1 for 2 with 1 BB, 1 Run and 1 RBI 

Kylie Lormand went 1 for 1 with 1 run 

Cierra Treigle went 1 for 2 with 1 BB

 

With the split the Lady Bears improve to 15-17, while the Sun Chiefs improve to 24-11.

 

The Lady Bears will be back in action next Tuesday April 5, 2022, when they host the Coastal Alabama North Eagles in a doubleheader at Traction starting at 1 pm.
