Lady Bears split with Eagles

The Lady Bears began their four-game spring break road trip this afternoon in Monroeville, Alabama against the Coastal Alabama North Eagles. The Ladies would earn a split with the Eagles. The Lady Bears would win game one 10 to 0, in five inning run rule but drop a heart breaker,in game two, with a 7 to 6 extra inning loss to the Eagles. 

Game 1:

A huge day at the plate for Red-shift freshman Brooke Romano and a dominating pitching performance by freshman Kelsie Bell Etheridge leads the Lady Bears to a 10 to 0 game one run rule victory.

The Lady Bears would get on the board first with 2 runs, in the second inning. Montana Smith would reach on a walk and score on a bunt by Kelsie Bell Etheridge for the ladies first run of the day. Claire Blanchard who singled up the middle would score on a steal of home for the ladies second run.  In the third inning, Brooke Romano would hit a double to centerfield scoring Brooke Duhon who reached on a single. Romano would score when the Eagles would load the bases and they would hit Blanchard. After three innings, the Lady Bears led 4 to 0. Baton Rouge would add two more runs to their lead, in the fourth, when Brooke Romano would single to left field driving in two runs. After four, the Lady Bears led 6 to 0. Baton Rouge would seal the run rule victory with four runs, in the fifth, to win game one 10 to 0. Kylie Lormand would double scoring two runs and Brooke Romano would single driving in two more runs. Freshman pitcher Kelsie Bell Etheridge kept the Eagles off balance all game. The Eagles only had two hits in the ball game with five strikeouts.

 

Kelsie Bell Etheridge started on the mound and dominates with a five-inning shutout performance. KB allows 0 runs on 2 hits while striking out 5. Crimson Wells took the loss for Coastal North. She pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while striking out 3.

 

Baton Rouge outhit Coastal North 10 to 2. Coastal was credited with two errors in the ball game.

 

Lady Bears Game 1 Highlights:

Kaitley Fisher had 2 Runs.

Brooke Duhon went 2 for 4 with 2 runs.

Brooke Romano went 3 for 4 with 1 Run and 5 RBIs. 

Montana Smith went 1 for 3 with 1 Run and 1 BB.

Claire Blanchard went 2 for 2 with 2 Runs and 1 RBI.

Kelsie Bell Etheridge had 1 Run and 1 RBI.

Kylie Lormand went 2 for 3 with 1 Run and 2 RBIs. 

 

Game Two:

The Lady Bears would jump out to an early lead but watch it slip away with a walk off double,in the eighth inning,  by Coastal Alabama North. The Eagles would come back and win game two, 7 to 6.

The Lady Bears would get on the board first with two runs, in the first inning. Claire Blanchard would single scoring Romano and Smith who both reached on singles of their own. After one inning, the Lady Bears led 2 to 0. Baton Rouge would tact on two more runs, in the second, when Brooke Romano would reach on an error scoring Fisher and Duhon who had both reached on singles. After two innings, the Lady Bears led 4 to 0. The Lady Bears would scratch across another run, in the third, to take a 5 to 0 lead. Again, in the fourth inning, the Lady Bears would score another run off of a Brooke Romano single up the middle to take a commanding 6 to 0 lead.  Leanne Lain was dealing on the mound for Baton Rouge. She kept the Eagles off balance at the plate for three innings. In the fifth inning, the Lady Bears had their chances to close out the game and leave with another run rule victory, but they would strand the bases loaded.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles bats started to come alive. The Eagles would score 2 runs, in the fifth, one, in the sixth and they would tie the game with 3 runs, in the seventh. At the end of regulation, the game was tied at 6 apiece. Again, in the eighth the Lady Bears had their chance to score but a base running error would end the inning. In the eighth, the Eagles would double scoring the runner on second to win the ballgame in walk off fashion.

 

L. Harrell earned the victory for the Eagles. She pitched 8 innings allowing 6 runs off 15 hits while striking out 4. Leanne Lain started on the mound for the Lady Bears. Leanne pitched 3 innings allowing 0 runs on 5 hits while striking 2. Jodi Broussard pitched two innings in relief. Saylor Young pitched one and one-third innings while Kelsie Bell Etheridge pitched two thirds of an inning and took the loss for the Lady Bears.

 

Baton Rouge outhit Coastal North 15 to 14. Baton Rouge was credited with two errors compared to one for Coastal.

 

Lady Bears Game 2 Highlights:

Kaitley Fisher went 3 for 4 with 1 Run.

Brooke Duhon went 2 for 5 with 2 runs.

Brooke Romano went 2 for 5 with 1 Run and 1 RBI.

Sarah Petite went 2 for 3.

Claire Blanchard went 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

Alyson Pourciau had 1RBI.

Zoe Nettles went 2 for 2.

Destiny Coleman went 1 for 3.

 

With the split the Lady Bears improve to 6-17, and the Eagles improve 14-18.

The Lady Bears will continue their road trip tomorrow, Wednesday April 7 when they travel to Niceville, Florida to take on Northwest Florida State College Raiders in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.

Note: With today's victory the Lady Bears have reached 100 victories for the program.
