Lady Bears Split Season Opener with Southwest

On Thursday, the Lady Bears opened the 2021 season and their tenth in the program history at a new home, Traction Sportsplex.  The Lady Bears won their season opener for only the second time in program history with a 7 to 4 victory over the Southwest Mississippi Lady Bears.  Baton Rouge would split the day with Southwest, as Southwest would win game two 9 to 5.

Game One:

Baton Rouge would get on the board first with a run in the first. Kaitley Fisher lead off the game with a double to left field.  KK was moved over by a sac bunt by Alyson Pourciau and she would score on a Brooke Romano double to center field. After one inning, BRCC led 1 to 0. Baton Rouge would extend their lead, in the third inning, when Sarah Petite would hit a two-run homer, the first of her collegiate career, over the left field fence. BRCC Lady Bears stayed hot ,in the fourth inning, with four more runs to extend their lead to 7 to 0.  Claire Blanchard would lead off the fourth with a double to right field and score on a Leanne Lain single.  Brooke Duhon would pinch run for Lain and score on a Kaitley Fisher single. Kylie Lormand, who reached on a single, would steal third and score on an Alyson Pourciau ground out.   KK would score the Lady Bears fourth run of the inning on a Southwest throwing error.  Southwest Mississippi would attempt a rally with 2 runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning but Leanne Lain would shut them down to preserve the 7 to 4 victory.

 

Leanne Lain earned the victory for the BRCC Lady Bears.  Leanne pitched a completed game allowing 4 runs on 8 hits while striking out 7.  Latham took the loss for Southwest. She pitched 6 innings allowing 7 runs on 9 hits while striking out 6.

 

Lady Bears Game 1 Highlights

Kaitley Fisher went 3 for 4 with 3 runs and 1 RBI.

Brooke Romano went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI.

Sarah Petite went 1 for 3 with 1 Run, 2 RBIs and 1 HR

Frashaylon Angelle went 1 for 1.

Leanne Lain went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI at the plate.

Kylie Lormand went 1 for 2 with 1 Run.

 

In game two, BRCC jumped out to an early lead but watched their lead disappear when Southwest scored four runs, in the third, on route to the 9 to 5 victory.

Baton Rouge Lady Bears would get on the board first via a two-run homer to left field by freshman infielder Brooke Romano. Southwest would respond and tie the game in the second with a two-run homer of their own by S. Mason.  After two innings, the game was tied at 2.  Southwest would take advantage of the inconsistent  Lady Bears pitching to score four runs in the third inning to take a 6 to 2 lead. Baton Rouge would continue to fight and score two runs in the fifth inning to scratch closer.  Kaitley Fisher and Alyson Pourciau would hit back-to-back singles. KK would score on a Brooke Romano single and Alyson would score on a sac fly by Sarah Petite.  After five innings, Southwest led 6 to 4.  BRCC would score another run in the sixth inning when Frashaylon Angelle would single, advance on a wild pitch, and would score on another wild pitch.  After six, Southwest led 6 to 5.  Southwest would put the game away in the seventh via the long ball and a three-run inning.  Southwest Mississippi takes game two 9 to 5.

 

J. Gremillion earned the victory for Southwest.  She pitched 6.2 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while striking out 7. Kellsie Bell Etheridge earned the loss for Baton Rouge.  KB pitched 2.2 innings allowing 6 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2. Saylor Young pitched 4.1 innings in relief for the BRCC Lady Bears. Saylor allowed 3 runs on 8 hits while striking out 3.

 

Both teams end the day with a 1-1 record on the season.

 Kaitley Fisher went 1 for 3 with 2 runs.

Alyson Pourciau went 2 for 4 with 1 run.

Brooke Romano went 2 for 4 with 1 run, 3 RBIs and 1 HR.

Saylor Young went 1 for 2.

Frashaylon Angelle went 1 for 3 with 1 run.

 

 

The BRCC Lady Bears will travel to Bay Minette, Alabama on Saturday Jan 30 to take on the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs in a doubleheader starting at 2 pm.
