Lady Bears drop home opener to Sun Chiefs

The Lady Bears opened the 2020 season with a matchup against the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs, this afternoon at Oak Villa Park. In game one the Lady Bears struggled to find their offense and was unable to contain the Sun Chiefs high powered offense.  Baton Rouge falls in game one 12 to 3.  In game two, a late inning rally by the Sun Chiefs leads them to the 14 to 4 victory over the Lady Bears.

 Lady Bears fall in their home opener 12 to 3 to the Coastal Alabama South Sun Chiefs. Coastal Alabama South would open the game with four runs, in the second and four runs, in the third inning to take a commanding 8 to 0 lead.  The Lady Bears would get on the board with one run, in the third inning. Kaitley Fisher would reach on an error and score on a Brooke Romano single to centerfield.  After three innings, the Sun Chiefs led 8 to 1.  The Lady Bears would add two more runs to their total, in the six inning, when freshman infielder Kellsie Clement would launch a two-run homerun over the centerfield wall.  After three innings, the Lady Bears trailed 8 to 3.  Coastal would tact on three more runs, in the seventh, to extend their lead to 12 to 3. The Lady Bears would strand runners at second and third, in the bottom of the seventh, thus losing game one 12 to 3 to the Coastal Alabama Sun Chiefs.

K. Carruth earned the victory for the Sun Chiefs.  She pitched 4 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 7. Saylor Young took the loss for the Lady Bears.  Saylor pitched 2.1 innings allowing 6 runs on 8 hits and walking  1.  Jodi Broussard pitched in relief for the Lady Bears allowing 6 runs on 7 hits while walking 3.

Game 1 Lady Bears Highlights:

Brooke Romano went 3 for 3 with 1 RBI and 1 BB

Courtney Ortego went 1 for 3 with 1 BB

Bailey Duhon went 1 for 4 with 1 run

Kellsie Clement hit her first collegiate homerun.  She went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 2 RBIs

 

Baton Rouge would fall behind early in game two, fight to come back but a seven run fourth inning by the Sun Chiefs would propel them to the 14 to 4 run rule victory. Coastal Alabama South would score 2 runs in the first and 3 runs in the second to take a 5-0 lead after two.  Baton Rouge would get on the board in the third inning with 4 runs. Jacee Gainer would walk and score on a ground out by Jodi BroussardBailey Duhon who singled to centerfield would score on a Kaitley Fisher line drive to left field. Courtney Ortego would drive in two more runs.  After three innings, the Lady Bears trailed 5 to 4. Coastal Alabama South would break the game open with a seven run fourth inning.  They would tact on two more runs in the fifth inning to seal the 14 to 4 run rule victory.

 

Caitlin McRee earned the game two victory for the Sun Chiefs.  She pitched five innings allowing four runs on four hits while striking out one. Leanne Lain took the loss for the Lady Bears.  She pitched one and two-thirds of an inning allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two.

Game 2 Lady Bears Highlights:

 Kaitley Fisher went 1 for 3 with 1 run and 1 RBI

Courtney Ortego went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI

Jacce Gainer went 1 for 1 with 1 run

Bailey Duhon went 1 for 2 with 1 run

 

 

The Lady Bears will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Wesson, Mississippi to take on the Co-Lin Lady Wolves in a twin bill starting at 2 pm.
