Lady Bears Finish 1-4 on Opening Weekend

BRCC softball season started in Galveston, Texas this past weekend. The Lady Bears played five games in the Galveston College Invitational against some of the best competition in the NJCAA.  Albeit, preseason rankings, Baton Rouge faced #9 and #12 ranked teams in NJCAA Division I; plus, the #1 ranked team in NJCAA Division II.

Baton Rouge finished the weekend 1-4, with the lone win coming against Galveston College. The 4-3 victory was not the only brightspot of the weekend.

The season started against #9 ranked San Jacinto and BRCC fought them to a 1-0 decision. Although the game ended with a loss, the Lady Bears battled with one of the top teams in the nation. Sophomore pitcher, Alyssa Bush, was on the mound for Baton Rouge, but the offense could not provide support. BRCC managed two hits in the game. Royell Cobb broke up a no-hitter with a single in the fourth and Bria White hit a double in the 5th. 

Game two ended with a 10-5 loss against Alvin Community College. Alexis Groce finished the game 3 for 4 (3 singles) with three RBI's. White had another double, but this drove in a run, and Michala Hughes went 2 for 4 (2 singles) with an RBI.

The Lady Bears notched their first win of the season against #12 Galveston College. Sydnee McCall was on the bump for BRCC during the 4-3 victory. Bush went 3 for 4 against Galveston, knocking in three RBI's. Cobb had the other RBI when she hit a double.

In game four against Blinn College, the offense was non-existent for BRCC. The Lady Bears had zero hits in the 9-0 lost. 

To close out the weekend, Baton Rouge faced in-state power LSU-Eunice. Lady Bears lost the game 12-10, but the offense finished the weekend on a high note. BRCC gave up five home runs to the #1 ranked Bengals. 

Alexis Groce finished 3 for 4 with three singles for the second time of the weekend. Hughes went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single. Kathryn Cognevich had multiple hits, going 2 for 3 with a double and single. 

BRCC is at home on Thursday afternoon against Coffeyville Community College (KS). The games are being played at Oak Villa Park. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm.
