Bears defeat Southern Shreveport Port City Jags for first conference victory

It was an epic battle between the Baton Rouge Bears and the Southern University Shreveport Port City Jags, this afternoon, in the Bears Den. The Bears would rally late and hold off the Port City Jags for the 95 to 88 conference victory.

The Port City Jags would come out the gates fast as they would grab an early 14 to 6 lead over the Bears with 14:56 remaining in the half. During the next two minutes the Bears would go on a mini 6 to 0 run to pull with two; 14-12 with 12:16. For the last twelve minutes of the first half both teams would trade buckets and the lead. The Bears were down by three with 28.6 remaining when Courtney McCarthy would bank home a three pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 44 heading into halftime.

The first six minutes of the second half was similar to the first half with the game being tied four times and neither team would hold larger than a three-point advantage. The Bears would pull away in the last two minutes of the ballgame. The Bears would seal the victory from the free throw line making 6 out of 8 free throws, in the last minute, to secure the 95 to 88 victory over the Port City Jags.  The Bears outscored the Port City Jags 51 to 44, in the second half.

Laron Louis Jr led the Bears with 19 points. The Bears had four student athletes score in double figures: Laron Louis Jr., Jaiden Lee, Kialen Phillips and Courtney McCarthy. The Port City Jags were led in scoring by Z. Cowart with 26 points. The Port City Jags also had four student athletes score in double figures.

With the victory the Bears improved to 10-11,1-1 while Southern Shreveport Port City Jags fell to 6-7,0-1 on the season. Southern Shreveport still leads the overall series record with 23 wins and 18 losses over Baton Rouge.

Bears Highlights:

Laron Louis Jr. led the Bears with 19 points.

Jaiden Lee added 18 points.

Kialen Phillips scored 16 points.

Courtney McCarthy added 13 points.

The Bears will return to action next Saturday February 10, 2024, when they take on the Delgado Dolphins at 4 pm in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center.
